Pontiac 5.7L

I am hunting for an American V8 to replace my Straight S6 (insert grin) for my Dax...
I have found a Pontiac 5.7L engine and box for sale (very reasonable price!). Year of manufacture is 1975. Does anyone know if this is a GM, Pontaic own or a Chevy engine??
This leads to the eternal question... Ford or Chevy??!!

Cheers guys.

Also, to add to the above, when choosing a V8, what do I need to make sure is on the engine (or not) between all the choices out there?

I know from a lad at work who has a pontiac 400 engine, that pontiac and chevy parts are not interchangable. But parts such as Edelbrock performance parts are available.Try US automotive in Bedford.

RE: Pontiac 5.7L

Hi,

The 1975 Pontiac is a genuine Pontiac engine, as Steve G have told you, 1975 chevy and Pontiac engines are different, the Pontiac is a little bigger and heavier, have too different bore and stroke, different engine mounts (check with the manufacturer of your chasis) and the parts since are a lot of less popular, are more expensive and it is a little more difficult to get power.

If you can, get a chevy, additionally the 1975 engine were not a powerfull engines, from 1972 to early 80st due the contamination and gas comsumption the USA engines delivered a very little power and you must got a lot of parts for getting a reasonable power.

My advise is get a Chevy engine, for me the best, or Ford if you like it.

Thanks for you feedback guys.
I shall try and source a Ford (if I had to choose between the two), but it seems Chevy's are that bit easier to come by.

RE: Pontiac 5.7L

Matt,

I too am going to use a Ford motor in my kit, at first I thought sourcing one was hard but a few phone calls soon set me straight. If you get the club mag have alook in the back if not try ringing Adrian on 0121-3501116, he's bringing in an Ford 302 for me with his next shipment.
I know he concentrates on 351's if thats you choice.

Bits also are not too expensicve, my advice hunt in the US, try www.fastengineparts.com, or www.summitracing.com.
Ive just placed an order for a brand new CATpep crank, eagle SIR5090FP rods, full fell pro gasket set, melling HV oil pump and ARP head bolts for use with the Edelbrock heads and its cost me £450 ish so far (waiting for customs to do their thing) that was with 4-10 days air delivery.

The cam and rods in the UK from real steel cost £569alone!!! so Ive saved money and got oil pump, gaskets and ARP head bolts for free!!

Also imported a timing cover from www.a1automotive.com this cost me £68 all in. Again Real Steel price is £125.

hope some of that helps.

Good luck

Andy

RE: Pontiac 5.7L

Andy,
I spoke to Adrian last night! I think I will source my engine through him too. What condition are you expecting the engine to come in? DO you know what year it will be (or just pre-'6?

Thanks for the www.fastengineparts.com website... what an excellent place - I am amazed at some of the prices. Why did you need a new front cover?

Picked up a 3.54 diff lastnight too...

Let the fun begin....

Kev,
Jon at Simply Performance delivered it personally to me lastnight for £295. Couldn't ask for a better service! So anyone looking for a diff or Jag part, give him a call (can be found in Snake Torque mag)!!

RE: Pontiac 5.7L

Matt,

Well the new front cover, theres a story!!.

To say I went off a little before the starting gun may be apt!!
Basically I was going to buy a block through Peter Jones, just the block so it would not come with front cover etc. I spotted said cover on ebay at a good price and ordered it. The block then turned out to be a little big on overbore so I passed on it and am going to Adrian. Hence the new timing cover sitting under my desk. So if the engine I get has a good cover I will have a spare and should be able to sell it. I will also have a set of 302 heads, rods and crank spare as Im using the Edelbrock performer package and again before I knew I was buying a whole engine I purchased a brand new nodular 9000 crank.

As far as engine condition I quizzed Adrian who siad the engine will be iether standard or needing a +30 bore, the block and crabk are guaranteed crack free. Not sure about what ancillaries will come with it, it will however have a flexplate so a fly wheel will be required. (I think he does a good deal on those too!)
I asked for as early as possible but as long as its pre 86 then emmissions will be fine and all my bits should fit (bar the gasket set)

Adrian told me he has ordered for www.fastengineparts.com as well and has never had any trouble.

Adrian mentioned about 12 weeks to get the engine, what did he say to you (Not checking up on you Adrian if you read this, its just my memory is bad and I dont want to ring again!!)

I am going to get my diff and rear axle in November for John Gordons. 3.07 P/lock for £250.

Keep us up to date with progress

Andy
