Does your RV8 leak oil a lot ?

Hi,

I'm still not 100% sure what engine I should install.
I currently have a Ford V6 (2.9L - 145 HP & 222 NM), ready to install.
But I'm not yet convinced that that engine is the right engine for my Sumo.
I read and heard a lot of good and bad things about a Rover V8.
One of the bad things is that they are famous for oil leaks.

Is that true ? How much oil does your RV8 leak ?

Michael

None what-so-ever.

DON'T use - a sump gasket : they're crap, use silicon.
- the older silver 'tin' valley gasket, use the newer rubber coated one.
- a block that is old enough to need the rope rear crank oil seal.
- cork rocker cover gaskets, go to LR dealer and buy a pair of the new rubber ones with built in compression limiters (fit all Rover rocker covers.

RE: Does your RV8 leak oil a lot ?

The reason why I asked is that, in our club (Cobra Club Belgium) there are a lot of guys who are struggling with oil leaks on their V8s... I'm not sure they all have Rovers, but some have, and they also have oil leaks.

Since I'm not yet a 100% sure what to fix into the chassis, I want to make sure I wont have to put a piece of cardboard under the car every time it's parked in the garage .

Another guy also told me that he had 2 Land Rovers and they always were leaking oil.
So thanks of the tip on the rubber gaskets... I'll make sure they get in there when I'm going for the Rover.

RE: Does your RV8 leak oil a lot ?

I've got a major oil leak problem on my rover V8, but it was entirely my fault. Cracked the sump on a speed bump :} :} :} .I am now pondering on how to deal with the oil slick in my garage ;( ;( .Whatever engine you fit, make sure that you give adequate ground clearance, or you have to put up with experiencing a minor heart attack every time you go over a speed bump. (The bloody things should be banned).

RE: Does your RV8 leak oil a lot ?

Iv'e had the same problem with a cracked sump. The less messy way is to remove drain plug, drain oil, leave for a week with a shallow tray that will fit underneath, make sure you don't leave car on a jack or ramps or the oil won't drain. After a week all oil should be drained, then it's a matter of jacking up car, get under undo bolts and replace another sump. As prevoulsy said use silicon instead of gasket. As far as i know all RV8 sumps up to 1988 are the same.

RE: Does your RV8 leak oil a lot ?

If you buy a knackered old engine and just fit it you'll probably find it leaks. You'll have too be prepaired to spend a little money on rebuild costs. The old rope seal (on the old units) can be machined out to fit the newer type seals. I've got cork gaskets and never had a problem, I have a tin valley gasket and never had a problem, you will also find that the engine won't leak oil on a rope seal (if its new) untill its running, which is like one drip every half an hour.

The real plus side is that if you fit a Rv8 it's going to have more hp and torque than the current engine your thinking of, and there is a difference in sound too. :tu
