Red Top Battery Terminals.....

Hi All,
just got hold of a red top 40 battery and have discovered that it has little tiny terminals, not the standard battery terminals.
I have the battery cables from Dax which have big beefy ends on them...what do I do?

cheers

Ben :}

RE: Red Top Battery Terminals.....

Cut them off and resolder some lugs from the nearest auto factors.

Unsolder the existing terminals from the cable and resolder or clamp some new ones on.

RE: Red Top Battery Terminals.....

The battery has an M6 connection.
The terminals you need are high current ring crimp terminals.

You also need to know the size of your battery cables in mm2, I'm not familiar with the Dax, but the GD uses 25mm2 cables as the battery is in the front.

If your battery cables were 25mm2 the marking on the crimp connector would be something like "CT25-6", the letters may change depending on manufacturer of the crimp. Similarly 35mm2 cables would need a "CT35-6" crimp.
Never use the incorrect size of crimp, as the connection will be substandard and a fire risk with the current flow required for a starter motor.

If you can take the battery cables to an industrial electrician (or an auto electrician who does larger jobs), they will have the correct ratchet or hydraulic crimping tool (with hexagon dies) required to correctly apply the crimp to the cable. Manual indent types aren't that good, and require a lot of force to operate.

Failing that, you can always solder the terminals on to the cables, but the connection resistance will be slightly higher (though it shouldn't be a problem)

Simon.
