Experience of Nitrous?

Am thinking about Nitrous injection for my Ford 302. Does anyone out there have any experience of Nitrous injection i.e is it worth while, is it a major headache, is it as simple as it sounds?

Regards to all

RE: Experience of Nitrous?

Hi,

I’ve never fitted it to an American V8 but have to quite a few other cars, from a Mini to a Sierra Cosworth, and highly recommend it.

It is simple enough to do yourself but the suppliers should be able to fit it for you if you’d rather at little extra cost. I would start with a smaller jet size and move up once you’ve tried/tested it, you’ll find that’s pretty standard advice.

The up-side is that you have extra power on tap without effecting the reliability and fuel consumption of the engine.

The only down-side I can think of is that once you’ve moved up to a larger jet size you can get through the stuff at an alarming rate, especially on your V8, and it isn’t cheap to buy the gas. Some say the gas welders use, much cheaper, is fine to use and others say it isn’t refined enough. I don’t know if that’s just to talk people into paying loads for the ‘proper’ gas or not, personally I haven’t dared risk it.

Another plus point is the kits are easy to remove again and they hold their second-hand value very well, so if you don’t like it you will get most of your money back.

There are lots of horror stories surrounding spray but as long as it is set-up properly, used correctly and your engine is in good condition there is nothing to worry about at all. All the good kits come with bits that stop you using it at the wrong times, triggered by the peddle being flat on the floor etc.

I have found the kits in the States are about half the price they are here, if you can get one from over there shipped to you. With an empty bottle

Cheers,
Andy

RE: Experience of Nitrous?

research,
research,
research,
research!!!!

You can't do enough. Everything from;
your insurers,
your transmission,
your current ignition package,
how restrictive your current exhaust is,
has your car being rolling roaded to gain the optimum base set up,
how much power do you want V need for forged pistons,
current fuel pump capability V uprating or adding a second pump,
switching methods & safety cut outs,
heater blankets,
do you need progressive controlling, (definately best)
what your mechanical skills are..

phew

and that's all I can think off in 20 seconds.

I thoroughly recommend it though please believe to do it safely and properly for a reasonable power output it will never be just 'bolt on'.

Russel Ram was very helpful to me and I found two mad guys who raced a drag bike who have been invaluable.

Start the research and even if you don't do it you will have found it a very interesting exercise.

For my SBC I have a NOS Sniper system, Jacobs progressive controller (with Nitrous cut out and rev limiter), Jacobs cap adapter to the HEI, Jacobs Ultracoil and ProStreet, forged pistons, stronger box, seperate fuel line and holly blue pump, a safety cut out to the pump in event of accident, plus lots of small additions I've since forgotten about.

Good luck and enjoy.

Skid
