Exhaust pipe shape, not just size!

As some of you will know, Dax do not recomend underslung exhaust systems on thier Cobras, they did not tell me till after I had bought the kit but I have still gone for an underslung system because I like it that way. The ground clearence is not brilliant but I am thinking of trying to inprove it by getting the same cross section area of a round pipe from a rectangular section. First has anyone every tried this, second will it work for flow etc, third where can you get 1.5mm section that would be suitable(say 1inch X 2.5inch), forth am I wasting my time. I know that the USA NASCAR machines have very low ground clearence and have seen them use very wide but shallow mufflers, can you get them in the UK? Any help would be appreciated:tu :tu :tu :tu :tu

RE: Exhaust pipe shape, not just size!

Simon,

square section tube is very inefficient for flow. A square section 2 inch tube, say, is will flow little more than a 2 inch diameter round section, even though it has greater CSA. This is because that flow stagnates in the corners. Rectangular section would be slightly better, say equivalent to an oval section of the same height and width. However, I've never seen a muffler with either square or rectangular inlet/outlets - dare say you could get some made up though. Go to the Summit Racing site and type in 'muffler' - they have a huge range available - some little greater in depth than the pipes going in/out. I particularly like the Flowmaster boxes - very free flowing.

How about a pair of Cherry Bombs, my mates got them on his AK, lovely sound and they passed the SVA. He's got them in the system, not as tail pipes.

Have a look at these. It's on the new de dion chassis which apparently leaves less room than before to work on. Thee is 3 inches clearance at its lowest point. That is where the silencers are located which just happens to be between the rear wheels.

I have seen cars where parts of the exhausts made from 4 inch tube, squashed to oval in sections to pass axles etc. (There is a motorsport place near me thats always sticking twin turbos on clios /focus and such, and they're always lowering cars etc)

I also saw a dax a while back which had much of the volume of the silencers tucked up into the spaces either side of the fuel tank. the piping was a little tight though, but very tidy

Hi,

Perhaps what you need is something like the rear silencer in the pics that AK knocked up for me for around £200.

Looks the business, internally baffled by perforated cones, and bends up underneath the fuel tank perfectly.

Cheers,

Tony

RE: Exhaust pipe shape, not just size!

Hi all, thanks for all your thoughts. If you get a chance have a look at this web site(www.drgas.com/catolog.asp?id=2)and all thier low clearence options. If only they were available from Halfords. If any one knows where I can get oval section pipes from in the UK it would be good to know, thanks again, Simon:tu :tu :tu :tu
