| High mileage LS1 I have been offered a high mileage LS1. It is a '99, but with 78K miles on it. The price is good ($3,220 - it comes with a T56) and the guy is reputable (I've met him at his business), but is the engine likely to be shagged or are they just run in at that? He has a '98 engine with 21k miles which is $3790. Should I hold out for a lower mileage one? Robin Drive it like you stole it... http://www.creffield.com/cobra/index.html

| RE: High mileage LS1 It all depends on how its been looked after, but bear in mind that the cylinder sleeves on 98/99 LS1 will only stand a .005 rebore (which is little more than a hone) so if the bores are not all they should be, then unless you resleeve, you cannot reuse the block. The later LS1 had the sleeves redesigned a little, and will stand a traditional rebore. get compression, oil pressure and leakdown tests done , which will tell you lots about the condition of rings, valves etc. Given average wear, replacing rings and shells ought see you fine for another 50,000, but if you plan to run it "as is" then I'd opt for lower miles Steve Steve GDEuro/LS6/T56 in progress sgullick@waverider.co.uk

| RE: High mileage LS1 Go for the lower mileage one, especially if it comes with the box as well. The difference in price works out at a discount of one cent per mile for the additional 57,000 miles so the decision is a no brainer. The lower mileage engine you can take a chance without doing a rebuild, just slot it into your chassis but the higher mileage one.......I'd rebuild the thing just to be on the safe side and then it starts to get expensive. Cheers, Tony
