Wiper Motor

How do I disconnect the spiral cable from the wiper motor in a DAX? I've undone the union that connects the motor assembly to the copper tube, but am unable to pull the spriral cable out of the motor.

My wipers seem to be struggling and I'm not sure if its a problem with the motor or the cable/wipers sticking.

The wipers have been fine up until the last time I used the car, when I noticed the wipers struggling to move across the screen - even when it was wet. If I pull the blades away from the screen they then seem to move at the correct speed, but on the screen they will not.

I've checked the earth and voltages at the connector block to the motor, and these seem good - with only about 0.2V dropped relative to the battery voltage.

Thanks,
Tim.

RE: Wiper Motor

Hi Tim.
First you have to remove the wiper arms from the wheel boxes then you can draw the cable out with the motor.
The cable has to be un hooked from inside the motor. this is done by removing the cover on the side of the motor and then remove the circlip on the opposite side that holds the drive gear in place, when the drive gear circlip is removed the gear can be lifted which will allow the cable to be unhooked.
From what i can recall your motor was a second hand one so it's possible that it's getting a little tired nowadays.
Some fresh grease on the cable wouldn't go a miss though and then check how freely it can run through the tube.

RE: Wiper Motor

Thanks Dave that makes sense.

I'd hoped you'd respond as I didn't want to disturb you at home you over xmas.

Is the motor from a mini or a sierra? - might make a visit to the scrapyard and get a replacement.

Thanks for your help as always.

Cheers,

Tim.

RE: Wiper Motor

Hi Tim,
Did have the same problem with a mini once! The spindle had partially seized in the wheelbox! May also be worth checking those once the cable is out.
Cheers

RE: Wiper Motor

Tim,
I had the same problem with mine - Dave must have been supplying lazy motors when he built ours!
In the end I had to resort to buying a new motor from the local Rover dealer - about £65 if I remember - but the wipers now work a treat.
Cheers,
Kevin.....

Hi Kev.
I could have fitted new motors to both your cars if you'd wanted..................But you would have had to pay the extra.

RE: Wiper Motor

Haven't had a chance to take the old one out yet after Dave gave me instructions, but I have found new ones (reconditioned maybe?) for £38 + vat from http://www.minispares.com/web/SUBTYP..._Inventory.cfm

Could just need new brushes also I guess, but probably easier just to get a new one.

Cheers,

Tim.
