Glass fibre undulations

My car was fortunate enough to require a new bodyshell (!) around three years ago. Unfortunately it was necessarily painted soon after it came out of the mould (my car was repaired by a garage in the UK at the insurers expense) and has since acquired minor ripples or undulations in a few areas. Is it safe for me to assume that after three years it is now stable and that if I spend the £ on a new paint job that it will be worthwhile. Or is it possible that the glass fibre can go on moving even after three years? My original shell was not painted until after it was three years old and it was great.

Thanks

Nigel

I "found" an older dax as an unbuilt kit. The shell was 10 years old, and had no ripples. once the kit was assembled and finished, a bunch of ripples appeared after a hot trip to France. I guess these things can show even after years, but have been told by painters that as long as the shell is baked, any movement will occur and be flatted out prior to painting.

Having said that - I still believe it is good practice to let the shell bake outside for a while prior to painting

Hi Nigel,

Hi have a very bad experience with this subject Nigel, my car was build for the first time at 1986, the last year I did a new paint job with a new schema (Blue with white stripes)
With the nice temperatures of the last summer and in particular because I have, in one day, exposed the car to the sun (parked at 42°C) for at least 6 hours, the problems with the polyester begun.
I think that the previous owner never expose the car to the sun for a long period.
Don’t think that if you drive the car in a hot day you are exposing to the sun, the fact is that when you are driving the body will cool down and never got the height temperatures that require.

See for more information (with a picture) in my previous posted topic.

You have posted an article in hour Dutch “Paper Snake” about the “Mirrors” at the last picture (Photo 11) you mention that “you have never seen one of these on a replica” well I can tell you that I have one of these mount on my car. Check my webpage to see the pictures. (I can help you with you new project “Side Screens”) I will make extra pictures and send to you.

RE: Glass fibre undulations

Hi there,

Thanks for thr advice on the shell. My new shel has been in the sun plenty of times stationary since it was fitted so I really hope it has stopped moving.

Pleased you saw th mirrors article and the item 11 fitted to your car looks good and is authentic too.

Some interesting stuff on your website also. I look forward to any stuff you can send on sidescreens.

Thanks and regards

Nigel B

PS Don't think we've met at the Castle weekend - I have been there for the past three years but don't recall meeting you there. Hope we get to meet either in the NL or in Germany this next year.

RE: Glass fibre undulations

Hi Nigel,
I am a member of the Dutch Cobra Club from day one but the last years I have done anything with the Cobra because of different reasons. The last year and after a total restoring, the Cobra was again on the road.
But just two day’s before the vacations and with out any test drive, we start to drive to Spain, not with luck because we get stock in Belgium. (200 km. from home)
Some fine tuning was needed and that was the reason that we weren’t there in the Castle weekend in September.
I hope we can meet in the near future and exchange some thoughts.
Do you have selected the paint color of the Cobra?
Regards,
Cobra289
