| RE: Chevy starter motor shiming Apart from the shims and the securing bolts the only other tool needed is a steel paper clip. The humble paper clip is about .04" in diameter - good enough for the .035 to .060 clearnce you need. Provided you can introduce the paper clip to a tightish fit between flywheel ring gear and the pinion you are OK. So - fit the starter and pull out the pinion by hand or lever with a srewdriver and measure the backlash between the gears with your paper clip. Add or subtract shims as necessary - you can use half a shim if necessary and once you are happy you can bolt up and leave well alone. The operation is easier if done before you mount the gearbox but not impossible afterwards - just a fiddle. :} |

| RE: Chevy starter motor shiming I thought that the paper clip went between the end of a starter pinion tooth and the mating 'valley' of the ring gear?

| RE: Chevy starter motor shiming I can get my paper clip in the vally (oh missus) way after the backlash tightens up.Which is correct? Also I`ve noticed that when the starter pinion is fully forward, it only engages just over half the ring gear depth. Is this to be expected ? Regards Malc |

| RE: Chevy starter motor shiming Correct - the paper clip fits between the tip of the starter gear teeth and the 'valley' on the ring gear. |

| RE: Chevy starter motor shiming This is where the paper clip goes, then add shim(s) if too tight Rob:tu
