Chevy 350 HO

Gents,
I'm considering buying a dax with a 350 HO chevy. How much horsepower does this have with Edelbrcok heads/holley carb? The guy reckons 400hp but that seems a bit ambitious to me. Also is there any way of guesstimating horsepower by acceleration times, say 60 to 100 mph.
I suppose the real question is how do you know if something will do like it says on the can.

If it is a standard 350 how much would it cost to get the power output up to 350/400 hp?

Also is a T5 gearbox up to the job
thanks
Mike.B

RE: Chevy 350 HO

I would think it'd be somewhere around 350-400 if it's got all the right kit on it.
If it was a stroker like mine around 450.{-} {-}

RE: Chevy 350 HO

Kev,
The guy doesn't know that much about it as it wasn't his build. Just edelbrock heads and holley.
Also, i have searched through old threads for help on rear diff identification. From that I can see I need to look on the rear housing to find a tag giving ratios. Will this also indicate whether its got limited slip or not.
Mike

RE: Chevy 350 HO

Hi Mike
If you are lucky and the tabs are intact one tab gives ratio and another (if fitted) will say PL (powerlock)

RE: Chevy 350 HO

Mike

Loads of people guess horsepower, and they're usually optimistic! My new 383 should be 450-500bhp, but I won't know until it's running and dyno'd. Torque is more important I'd say, but that's another story..... At the end of the day, how does the car drive? If it scares you, then it's got enough power, whatever the figures may be! If it is putting out a lot of power though, it mught be prudent to check that the whole setup is capable of handling the power so there are no weak links and nasty surprises lurking...gearbox etc. (I'm sure someone can say more about the T5 gearbox than me, but I think that may not like 400 bhp, although again it's the torque that counts!)

As to the diff. If it's limited slip, perhaps the easiest way to check it is to jack the complete back end up and turn one roadwheel...if the other one turns then it's a LSD, or jack up one side and try to turn the wheel. If it turns easily with the other one still on the road, then it's not, if it's hard to turn, it's limited slip.

You're right about identification tags though, there should be one stating the ratio, and if it's limited slip, then a tag with PL should be on there too (PowrLok). If there are no tags, and you want to know the ratio, then you'd need to take the inspection cover off the back of the diff, and patiently turn the wheels as you count the teeth. The visual inspection would also give you the chance to see if it's a PowrLok or not. Just remember to drain the oil first!

Current progress: Dax rediscovered under the dust, 383 Chev arrived from the USA, Tremec TKO in a box, and various bits on the shelf!

Hi Kev,

What cam have you got in your 383? Does it have a lumpy idle? :OT

RE: Chevy 350 HO

Standard 350 is 250 hp I think. You need uprated cam, performance heads, carb etc.

Depends how much you want to spend. Spanking new has cost me...erm. Well actually, I'm not sure. I guess around 6-7. That's good ol British skilled labour, no labouring around E bay trying to source parts.

I just said, i want it to do what it says on the tin..

60-100 times... about as long as it takes to say woo hooooo followed by a big laugh

}(

Have you seen a Dax? Does it have this engine in? etc etc etc.

Welcome to the forum

RE: Chevy 350 HO

Brian Nichols former owner of Southern Roadcraft once achieved 0-60 in 4.2 sec.In one of their cars with a 350BHP motor....He did use some sticky tyres though from what i can gather.

With the Edelbrock alloy heads there is every chance that the car will have 350BHP+ a good indicator that it has more power than this is the idle will be lumpier the more power it has.

The T5 gearbox is rated to only around 330Ft Lb of torque, a 350BHP engine will produce more like 380-400+ Ft Lb of torque but i have known many 350BHP Cobras with T5's that have never had a problem.

If the seller didn't build the engine himself check the engine no.,it may have a number that was put there by the supplier, if this is Repower or Real Steel i would give them a call to see if they have any records of it. You are looking for a number that begins with "RIN" or something like that.

RE: Chevy 350 HO

Hi David, it's an Edelbrock Performer RPM #7102 cam. Actually it idles reasonably well at about 800 or less. It never used to until I replaced the faulty HEI dissy the engine came with.
New HEI sorted it.

RE: Chevy 350 HO

Thanks for that I will have a look out for it when I see the car.
If I had one of those accelerometer gizmo's I should in theory be able to work out HP.
Dave I seem to remember in a long ago thread you said you bought one. Did it work?
Also Dave if you are wondering,I'm the one you phoned the other week regarding second hand cobs.
cheers
Mike
