Rover gearbox removal

Hi all, I have an LT77 which is attached to a 3.5 Rover in my AK. Gear changes (especially getting back into second from third) are pretty bad. I thought I will whip it out sometime soon and take a look. How easy is it to get the gearbox out in a standard garage with no pit ? Any top tips ?

Baring in mind I might go for a 4.6 sometime in the future, should I get the LT77 reconnd (£200 ish), or go for a new R380 (£1000 !!!) ?

Ta.

Marcus

RE: Rover gearbox removal

Marcus.

I had my engine & gearbox out not too long ago, it`s not too bad a job you just need a trolley jack to take the weight and axle stands high enough to allow it to slide clear.
I had a poor change from 2nd to 3rd and it turned out to be the rubber bushes that mount the gear lever remote which had perished. This allowed a bit of movement in the remote assembly enough to make gear changes a pain.Cost about £15 for a set of 8 bushes from Rimmer Bros.
You can reach underneath and check just by grabing the remote assembly and seeing if there`s any play in the mountings, it doesn`t take a lot.You can replace them without removing the box at all ,although you need double jointed fingers
I beleive the r380 is a stronger and more reliable box, providing you can afford £1000 personally I`d stick with the lt77 for the time being but my missus checks the bank statements

RE: Rover gearbox removal

Hi Tony, thats really interesting you should say that. I had the LT77 reconnd just before I put it in and I stripped the remote selector and put it back together again.. I am wondering if thats what is causing my problems. Best I whip it off and take a look first.

1st - 2nd is fine, but 2nd - 3rd is a pain and takes a while to find. When coming back down the box, all is ok until I go from 3rd -2nd and I get a bad clicking sound as though the remote selector is actually touching the prop... I will check it out.

Marcus

I have a spare LT77 lying on my garage floor, I got it from a guy who restores SD1's, he told me it was perfect, free if you want it, only problem is, I'm in Devon.

Marcus Definitely check the remote box - mine came a bit loose, hit the prop shaft and was a b****r to change gear. Brian
