Remote oil filter & cooler routing

Guys,
I am just sorting out a badly fitted remote oil filter and cooler system on my car, mainly because one of the oil line fittings was hard up against the chassis ! You cant trust anyone but your own work it seems!

I am also now concerned that it is not plumbed correctly.
Basically my question is, which way should the oil run through the filter. From the centre out or from the outer to the centre?

I have a take off adapter with 'in' written on the hole in the centre and 'out' on the off set hole. I then have a remote oil filter which has one inward facing arrow suggesting the flow presumably. They have plumbed the 'in' line to the inward flow side of the filter which seems wrong.
If someone can tell me which way oil should flow through a filter I should be able to work out the rest.

Thanks.

RE: Remote oil filter & cooler routing

Paul,

A cartridge-type oil filter flows in on the outer and out of the centre. Least that's what it says in my trusty Fundamentals of motor vehicle technology.

Hope this helps.

RE: Remote oil filter & cooler routing

So it looks like I was right that they plumbed it the wrong way. Glad I checked.

I believe the off set 'out' pipe on the adapter fitted to the engine should go to the off set 'in' connector of the remote filter. The out pipe of the remote filter should then go off to the oil cooler before returning back to the engine adapters central 'in' pipe fitting.

Thanks

RE: Remote oil filter & cooler routing

TEST IT FIRST!!!
I connected my filter the right way round (so I thought) I checked it several times before I fitted it and thought I was OK.
When I started the engine the oil flowed the WRONG WAY and could not get past the one-way valve fitted to the filter....result....totally screwed my brand new engine!
TEST IT FIRST!!!:}

Now Im worried !

I can see on my remote filter adapter which pipe goes to the centre and which is offset. It also has an arrow pointing inwards on the offset connector.

I guess when you say test it is to turn the engine over with the return hose disconnected and see if oil poors out.

DON'T take any chances. test it for yourself so you can g'tee the oil will be ok when the engine starts.

RE: Remote oil filter & cooler routing

Have a look at www.Cobralads.com, this guy blew up two engines (and expensive ones at that) before realising that he had plumbed his remote filter up incorrectly.....

Filter Oil goes in from the slides via a one way flow diaphram then through to the centre, trapping the particles in the filter en route, then out through the middle.

The 'oh ####' moment came for this guy when he asked if it was right that he got a handfull of metal particles coming out of the centre hole in the filter when he removed it.

As he had his Oil Pressure guage on the feed side of the filter he always recorded a good oil pressure, that one probably cost him his second engine.
