MSD question

I'm in the process of installing an MSD 6AL in my car.
Im a bit confused with the wiring that went to the + side of the coil. There are three wires, a white, a white with a grey stripe and a white with a yellow stripe. When the ignition's on, I have 12v at the white wire and white and yellow wire but not at the white and grey wire. The white and grey gets 12v when the ign is switched to the start position only.
Now I understand that the white/grey wire bypasses the ballast reiston to give a full 12v to the coil on start up but the MSD does not need this. What do I do, and where do I wire the tacho to?
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks
Simon

RE: MSD question

Greetings from New Jersey!

Usually:
White - ignition feed via ballast, to Coil +
White Yellow - Ballast bypass from starter motor, to coil +
White Grey - Tach, to coil -

Double check the tach wire though, I can't understand why you'd get 12V when cranking.

Simon.

RE: MSD question

Simon,

Thanks, should I get 12v from the wire that comes from the tacho? if so, can I connect that to the tach output on the MSD?

Thanks
Simon

RE: MSD question

OK, heres a picture of the back of the tacho, which shows the white tacho wire going to the + side of the coil!!! Now I know I don't connect it to the coil, it goes in the tacho output of the MSD, but I just want to check this is ABSOLUTELY right. (not the coil/MSD end but the tacho end)

Simon
Sorry to hijack your thread but I have been told that you can set the MSD6AL with a timing delay for running turbo or nos.I want a system that can do that but looking to the future,I remember somewhere a system you can link to traction control aswell.Anyone know wot I'm on about?????

RE: MSD question

Steve

You want the MSD6BTM (Boost timimng master).

Basically a 6AL but for turbo / supercharger / nitrous

Take a look at www.msdignition.com

RE: MSD question

Ah. A current operated tacho.
You ****DO NOT**** connect this to the tach output on the MSD - go to the MSD site and download the 6-series instructions:

http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/6series.pdf

then refer to the info and diagram on page 8.
Ignore "Chrysler" and just use the ballast that you have already.

I thought you were removing the MSD and going back to conventional ignition.....or is this where you are now up to, installing the MSD on the other car?

Simon.

RE: MSD question

But Simon, I'm using the magnetic pick up wires and it says in the instruction NOT to use the white wire if using the magnetic pick up?
