MSD 6AL versus Mallory Hyfire VI -AL

Hi guys,

I've got two questions and I havent a clue about electrics, so please bear with me.

I am currently running a Mallory Dual Points dizzy which I am having trouble setting up. The clamp that holds it appears to work only sometimes and the dizzy sometimes rotates slightly when I am on the move.

I reset the timing and everything is OK then it goes off again.

As I do not want this continual hassle, I am considering getting an electronic ignition box but dont really understand what they actually do.

Can I use my existing dual points dizzy with the box? or do I need to modify it in some way?

Does anyone know if MSD 6AL is better than Mallory Hyfire VI -AL?

Do I need to get another dizzy to suit the new box.

Will the prolonged spark provided by the box mean that the dwell angle and timing is less critical than with points?

Well thats 4 questions. Look forward to any assistance.

Cheers

david

David,
The electronic ignition box will NOT solve your basic problem.
Before you think of adding any electronic gizmo, get a better distributor clamp!

You can get crank triggers for these ignition boxes, but even so, if the distributor moves the spark will occur at the right time, but will be weakened or directed to the wrong cylinder, possibly causing engine damage under load.

As far as dwell is concerned, the boxes do not care. All they need to see is that the points open at the correct time, that is final.

The Mallory dual point dizzy will work OK. You can set the timing "static" with a meter or test lamp as a good starting point.

The two boxes are broadly similar in function, though from what I've just briefly looked at, the Mallory can have a MAP sensor connected to it, to electronically replace the vac advance can in the distributor. I use an MSD 6AL.

Hope this helps,

Simon.

Hi David

It might be a stupid question, but have you got the clamp the right way up.

I inadvertantly put it in upside down and suffered the same problem.

Regards

Snakebite

Hi Snakebite,

I have used the clamp both ways as well.

What is the correct way, flanges facing up or facing down?

Cheers

Hi david,
is the clamp a chrome plated one? if so then I recall somebody mentioning that you need to remove the chrome at the bit where it touches the dizzy?

cheers
Ben

Hi Ben, I agree the chrome is so hard and smooth that it allows the dissy to slide underneath it.
Also make sure that you really are clamping the dissy and not bottoming out on the block before the dissy casting. I recommend that you put a little extra bend in the clamp to make sure.
I had the same problem on the Chevy.
