Advise needed from you Chevy boys

Hello

I have a rebuilt Chevy 350 from Repower (there 350 HP spec). I`ve run it four or five times for 20 - 30 mins. It runs fine with good oil pressure. At tickover (900 rpm) I can hold the water temp at 90 deg ,if I keep the twin fans running ,for as long as I want . My problem is if I keep the revs at 2000 for five mins the headers start to glow red ( Stainless steel headers ). Is this to be expected with the car stationary or is there a problem with the setup. I`ve set the idle screws backed off 2.5 turns (preformer 600 carb) as advised by repower. The timing is 15 deg advanced @1000 rpm with the vac can uncoupled. 30 degs with vac can coupled & 45 deg @ 2000 rpm with vac can coupled.(The last two figures are a guesstimate as I havn`t got a turn back timing light.) Any advise please.

Regards

Malc

RE: Advise needed from you Chevy boys

Mine was like that.
I still haven't worn the "newness" off it - after 1600 miles.

Read the recent posts on off-idle hesitation etc.
The setup suffers a lean spot just off idle, which doesn't do anything towards cool running at this sort of speed.

After a few hundred miles I found that my fans were not running as often.

I've given up on the carb (though the tweaks are minimal, but require precision tools and knowledge to do correctly) - and I'm going EFI instead - not for more power (though that would be nice), mainly for smooth running and better mpg.

Simon.

Malc, I've got a Rover V8 and I was present when someone with a Windsor 351 had it's initial run to break in the cam, and on both occasions the headers glowed red hot so don't worry about it. I was warned by Ken at AK that this would happen so it would seam a normal occurrence. By the way I have now done 6,500 miles since then with no problems. :tu :tu :tu

I had this problem and mine glowed aswell, I did find my timing was wrong(running well lean) and by retarding slightly (Ithink) sorted it. Plus the fact its new aswell. I had to shut down early so not sure if cam broke in properly?? little lacklustre at 4000-5000rpm could need more setting up on a rolling road, anyone know a good one Herts/Beds??

To have the headers glowing at idle suggests that the timing is retarded, but if you say it's at 15 degs then it shouldn't be. 10 degs (vac disconnected)is a typical idle figure for a Chevy try that. A new engine will run hot for a few hundred miles usually. It's certainly worth getting the idle mixture sorted too. If you have an Edelbrock carb, go to their web site and check out the tuning tips.
