Header tank question

My radiator has a bottom hose outlet and a top hose outlet and another small outlet measuring about 1/4".

I don't understand how I can fit a header tank as the outlet on the radiator seems to small for a header tank.

Any help appreciated.

RE: Header tank question

Howard, not sure if you can see from this picture but the top and bottom hoses go as I am sure you already know but the small one you are on about on AK's go to the Header as in the picture. This is how all standard AK's are piped up unless people have changed the system and I have never had any bother at all with it, ie, IT WORKS

How many hoses come from your header, is it just the one ?

RE: Header tank question

Howard the top hose from the engine goes through a T piece the idea I think is if there is any air in the system as it goes past through the T the air will go into the Header and any air in the radiator will also go into the rad through the small hose you spoke about. Hopefully you will be able to just about see what I mean in this Picture.

I think I understand now, let me recap :-

You have 3 outlets on your radiator :-

1) top hose outlet
2) bottom hose outlet
3) small outlet which goes to the header tank

There is also another hose from the header tank which goes to the 'T' piece on the top hose.

Where did you get your header tank from ?

RE: Header tank question

Yes Howard that is correct. The Header tank is a standard header tank from AK who make them.

RE: Header tank question

Hi Howard.
You can get a header tank from numerous sources.
Basically it does as it says on the tin, It provides a HEAD of water above the system, as a header tank in a domestic central heating system does. The tank must obviously be the highest point in the system as it must keep the system topped up with water and allow any trapped air out. It should also have an air space in the top to allow for expansion due to temperature rise. Any excess pressure is then vented through the pressure cap/overflow pipe. All this said you need a feed from the header tank tee'd into either the top or bottom hose, a bleed hose from the top of the rad (small pipe) fed into the top of the header tank and an overflow from the cap. Still with it? Makes one of us!! :}
Cheers

RE: Header tank question

Yep, I have same header tank plumbed in same way, all perfect naver a proble. Keep it high though and should only be a small drop of water when cold detectable in that header. Can get a lot of expansion and its not a huge tank.
