fuel filler cap

I'm not sure if this problem is purely down to the fact that i'm using a pilgrim supplied aston style filler cap but when i filled her up i struggled to stop petrol splashing all over the car :} is this a common problem with all filler caps or am i missing something? :v can anyone explain how it should be done to avoid petrol spills? :tu

RE: fuel filler cap

Tony,

I have filled mine up a few times now, (doesn't seem to be long between each fill ).

Every time I end up spilling petrol all over the place because of spashback, unless you are very careful and only use about half nossle pressure it seem svery difficult to stop the spashback.

I think it is because of the baffle plate just inside the neck, not sure why it is there though.

Steve

RE: fuel filler cap

Tony I think you will find the problem is probably cos you haven't got a breather pipe so there is another route for the air to get out as fuel goes in. When you get your new tank get them to put one in for you.

RE: fuel filler cap

To be honest Martin i think Steve was right, it does seem to splash back from the baffling that sits about an inch below the filler neck, must be a Pilgrim design fault :tu

RE: fuel filler cap

Hi,
I don't think its a Pilgrim design fault as I have an AK which does the same.
You don't say if your filler cap is in the wing or on the bulkhead and if your tank is over axle or under boot.
I built a Pilgrim in the early nineties with central filler and I could fill it a lot faster than my Ak.
Its more likely to be that, if there is a bend in the filler pipe because of the position of the tank there is not enough drop (Gravity) and the fuel hits the bend and splashes back.
I think most Cobras have a similar problem and the answer is fill slowly.

Steve

RE: fuel filler cap

I have to agree with Steve - my DAX can take quite a time to fill up

seems a common problem - caused by lack of venting.

Regards Clive

RE: fuel filler cap

I experienced this for the first time yesterday when I took my Sumo to its first MOT. I think you will find that the plate just below the entrance to the tank is an anti-syphoning device, rather than have a locking petrol cap. I also believe this is an SVA requirement, which is why pilgrim and many others design their tanks like this. We will just have to get used to taking longer to fill up, which at least gives us longer to pose at the garage.

RE: fuel filler cap

Tony,
I agree with Neil, take it easy and pose. I put my Sumo back on the road for April and have filled up twice since then.

RE: fuel filler cap

I've got a rear wing mounted filler, and the tube runs at quite an angle. Takes me ages to fill up, so you are not the only one. Just relish all the admiring glances. (peolpe are actually thinking 'look at that flash git w***er dribbling the petrol into the fuel tank')!
