Chipped chrome.

Where the hood clips into the top of the windscreen, over the years the chrome has started to peel off (see attached) and I would like to somehow repair/make it look a bit better.

I have looked at so called chrome touch up paints but the only ones I have found have been rather silvery and I dont particularly want to use tape.

Has anybody got any suggestions/tips please.

Cheers.

The Rock Doc.

RE: Chipped chrome.

Sorry mate but thats a re-chrome job.
If one of your wells goes "pop" do you say "OK we'll put a tee in there and take the oil out the side".Nah strip it and replate,or send it back if you aint had it long.

RE: Chipped chrome.

doc,
Try getting it 'hard chromed'when you take it in.
apparently its alot thicker and tougher than normal chroming.
or so i was told by an engineer once.

But someone will propably now tell you it cant be done on that.
Anyway if you can its worth thinking about.:tu

RE: Chipped chrome.

Okay thanks. I think that will be next winters project, just need to patch it for this year. The very bottom left hand corner of the windscreen is also starting to go "milky" in colour so it will probably be a complete replacement job (build date 1995).

Whilst on the subject, over the last couple of years the exhaust is beginning to get stained brown where it goes from four into one (it looks worse than attached photo). Is this bit normally stainless, in which case is there anything to be done about that.

Thanks.

Rock Doc.

RE: Chipped chrome.

Hi Roc Doc,
To test if it is Stainless Steel you can use a magnet, if it doesnt stick than is stainless steel.
Bikers use a kind of acid and polishing to get rid of the bluing, but it will come back.
To get the best result you should internally ceramic coating, this will reduce the temperature of the exhaust and you will get some extra HP to.

RE: Chipped chrome.

Shows how much engineers listen to platers.Hard Chrome is an industrial finish for wear resistance on bearings and hydraulic rams etc.Decorative chrome is what we want, but done properly.Copper undercoat, especially on steel,a good layer of bright nickel and the a thin layer of chrome.Chipping is a result of poor adhesion normally caused by bad cleaning of the part prior to plating, trapping grease between the part and plating.I have spoken to both screen suppliers at shows and they both say they have problems with finishing.Unfortunatley neither have given me a try, yet!!!

RE: Chipped chrome.

Hi, if your pipes are s/steel you should be able to polish away burn marks with a polishing mop and soap, but as already said they will eventually reappear.
