EFI conversion

I've been offered a full EFI kit, the question is can i fit it to a carburettor RV8 or will i need sensors that were on an EFI engine but not a carb one? Would it just involve changing the manifold, fitting a high pressure fuel pump, wiring in the ecu and start the engine?
Your help is appreciated :tu

RE: EFI conversion

You will need a lambda sensor, throttle position, manifold pressure, fuel pressure etc.

It is a full replacement. x( x(

RE: EFI conversion

Do you know which system it is? If its flapper or hotwire then no lambda, unless it was for export market or your unlucky. The sensors are all fitted to the manifold and related parts that come with the EFI system, e.g. Plenum has throttle pot, manifold has coolant temp sensor and EAV if flapper. Really need to know which system it is, but the hardest bit will be getting fuel to engine and back again into tank and running in loom, not much of a job other than that.

RE: EFI conversion

HI Phil,
I believe it to be a flapper type, so assuming it is, what should i be checking to ensure that i have a full kit, i.e. is there a list of parts that i should ensure that i get? I assume from what you say i'll need a return pipe to the petrol tank as well.
One last question, if everything is there what would be a ballpark price for a second hand system? :tu

Cheers

RE: EFI conversion

Also need to get it mapped properly, you cannot run it with the carb although it might be a throttle body system.

RE: EFI conversion

From memory you should have, fuel pressure regulator, Extra Air Valve, Cold Start Injector, 8xInjectors, Flapper (Air Flow Meter), resistor pack, coolant temp sensor, timertemp sensor (these two sit beside eachother in manifold), throttle pot, plenum, inlet manifold, trumpets and base, ECU, fuel pump and loom. Dont think Ive missed anything. As long as its going on a 3.5 then it should fuel it OK without need for mapping, that isnt possible with the flapper ECU anyhow. As for price, £50 - £150 at a guess, seen them on ebay for that sort of money. Then it opens up the possibilities of replacing the ECU, dumping the flapper and getting it running really well,

RE: EFI conversion

Not that I'd guess it'll make that much difference, but the 3.5 efi cylinderheads are slightly different from the normal carb heads as they have small 'cutouts' on the inlet ports for the injector spray to flow more easily. If the heads were off, the mods would be easy to do by hand with a needle file. Good luck!

Knew it wouldn't be long before you got fiddling, but with your cob on the road for less than a week, it has to be a record!
Are you going to the East Midlands meet on sunday?

The Morgan web site has lots of useful links to other websites which give lots of information on the flapper EFi system. This will no doubt give you all the information you require to make an informed decision.
The main drawback of the flapper as phil says is the computer cannot be chipped or mapped
