RE: No oil temp sender take off on EDA engine?

Yes, the sump temperature is greater than the galley.

However if there is an oil cooler, the oil will flow through the cooler before it gets to the sump, therefore the cooler take off plate will be the best option, not the sump or the galley.

The sump will have oil that has passed through the cooler, the galley will have will not be a lot better as you will also get convection heat from the engine.

Oil flows through the cooler first, then down into the sump, the oil pump does not pick up oil from the sump and then through the cooler.

It is a sandwich plate between the filter head and filter bowl.

RE: No oil temp sender take off on EDA engine?

Robert, that engine was running a massive test bed oil cooler.

The flow diagram would go as follows:
Oil is sucked up from the sump via the oil pickup pipe, through the the pump and filter.
1. "Engine cold" it will go through the engine oil galleries and drain back to the sump.

2. "Engine Hot" the same but may divert through the cooler if the thermostat has opened supplying cooled oil back to the gallery, then the hot worked oil will drain back through the block into the sump (not via the cooler).
Therefore the hottest oil will be in the sump at the extremes of it's useage. :tu :tu

RE: No oil temp sender take off on EDA engine?

I thought it went from the engine to oil cooler then to sump, still, I could be wrong, very wrong, wouldn't be the first time.... :-; :-;

RE: No oil temp sender take off on EDA engine?

So, educate me, I always like to learn stuff.

The oil flows from the sump, through the pump, through the oil cooler (if there is one and the waxstat is open) up into the galley, down the oil drains and back into the sump.

Is that right?

RE: No oil temp sender take off on EDA engine?

That's about it, the work is done as the oil is squeezed through the bearings on the crank etc, chain tensioners and tappets etc. providing lubrication and cooling.
When it comes out of the bearings etc. it will will drain back through the cast oil drains in the heads and block, picking up more heat on it's way back to the sump.

What if there is a leak? Where does the oil go then (other than on the floor(for an external leak)? {-}
