    chevy 350 ci ignition timing

Could anybody tell me the correct ignition timing settings for the small block chevy 350 ci. I've seen many different figures quoted and wondered if there was a "correct" setting?

    Many thanks

Roger, there is no such thing as a standard timing setting for a particular Chevy 350. It will depend on many different factors related to your particular engine i.e. compression ratio, spark plug type, even down to the intended use of the vehicle. However you want as much timing as possible without detonation, as much initial timing with out hard starting and have the timing come in as quickly as possible without detonation off idle. Most applications will start between 10-16 degrees initial, end with 30-38 total. For more info see other info on this site.

Depends on the cam, compression ratio, etc.

Start with a setting of 10deg btdc at idle, vac advance disconnected and plugged for a "safe option". Reconnect when done.
Advance slightly in 1 degree steps and test-drive the car.
If you encounter pinking, back off the advance by 2 degrees.

If you have built up a "standard package" of performance parts (eg Edelbrock Performer RPM package), the supplier will be able to advise you.

However with a "mix and match" the only way to get an exact figure for YOUR engine, would be to have it dyno'd - and tweak the initial, mechanical and vacuum advance to what the engine needs.
