Hot Start or Not!!!!

Gents
I have nearly finished my build and decided to drive the beast out of the garage and get the engine really hot to check for leaks etc. Started like a dream and sounded great, No problems at all.
So switched off the engine for a bit and then tried to restart, managed to wear the battery down trying to turn her over so had to jump start it off the wife's car. After some time got it going but had troubled keeping it running smoothly.
I am now starting to fear that I am getting fuel vaporisation,
What’s the view of the experts.

Current spec: -
Chevy 350, Holly 600cfm, with mechanical choke, standard Mechanical fuel pump, ‘Filter King’ fuel filter (85mm bowl), and 10mm-fuel line insulated from tank to pump (engine).

Cheers Steve

RE: Hot Start or Not!!!!

Just a thought. Check the dizzy hold down clamp. Are you sure the timing hasn't gone out from when it started. Otherwise fuel is suspct.

RE: Hot Start or Not!!!!

after you've done that, see if you can get the fuel line as far away from the engine as poss before you need to take it to the carb.

Once restarted, keep the revs up a little.

And check yr fuel line to see where the fuel is, and particularly the fuel filter. Mine initially was bubling away which wasn't a good thing.

I believe a brand new out of the box mech fuel pump was a bit dicky and was letting the fuel return..

Doesn't matter if mine has been on a 5 minute or 30 minute run. If I stop and restart after resting 5 mins or so, the idle is terrible and the revs drop substantially and just need a couple of mins driving again to sort it out.

Another thing I have found that is that mine (and hopefully others) engine(s) seem to have some sort of starting procedure.

RE: Hot Start or Not!!!!

Hi Steve,
all of the other responses could lead you to the problem, but the other possible cause is the starter solenoid. There have been many threads over the last year or so on this. The end end fix is to fit a remote solenoid on the starter which keeps the cranking voltage/ current much higher.
Do a search on remote solenoid or hot starting and see what you come up with.

RE: Hot Start or Not!!!!

Paul, I reckon you're right about developing your own starting procedure. Each installation is going to be slightly different due to all manor of influences like fuel pressure, battery earthing, cooling.
Unlike Graham who doesn't need to give his gas to start it hot, I find mine starts much better hot if I give a couple of boot fulls of gas on the loud pedal.

RE: Hot Start or Not!!!!

Thanks Gents
A lot more possible problems, than I was thinking.
Have spoken to a few people that have similar cars at work and the common response, was that I need an Electric Fuel pump to ensure that the fuel had not evaporated.
I like the idea of a few more pumps of fuel before starting, I think I am currently a little nervous of flooding.

Will have to try a few more times to get better.

cheers Steve
