Main fuse location

As I'm doing the build sortof backwards, I have a lot of components but I won't get the body and chassis for a couple of weeks.

I'm in the process of modifying and adding a few extras to the wiring loom.
Where does the main fuse fit? Is it inside the car, or in the inner wing hidey-hole with the battery and heater?
Also, could I fit a 4-way fuse box next to it as I don't like some of those thin wires being protected by a single 50-Amp fuse!

Simon

RE: Main fuse location

The main fuse box is on the bulkhead in the engine bay, passenger side. You can just see the edge of it behind the MSD in this picture.

RE: Main fuse location

Not that one!
The big single 50-Amp jobbie that is inline with the battery positive connection to the main loom.

RE: Main fuse location

The main fuse is in the compartment with the battery.

What do you mean by those thin wires?

RE: Main fuse location

What I mean is the feeds to the lighting switch, and the feeds to and from the ignition switch. The only protection on these is by the main fuse. The feed to the ignition is not fused. Put a short on that at the engine end and I guess there's a possibility something will melt before the main fuse does.
It's not something specific to the GD loom - lots of production cars are built this way too. A friend's Audi had a slightly melted loom due to the ballast bypass shorting on the starter motor casing!
"It keeps kangarooing and now the wipers won't stop" .... the ignition feed had melted into the screenwash pump feed!

As I'm building this car "my way", I'm fitting a few more fuses than standard.
I'd have liked to do my own loom, but it takes time - which I didn't think I'd have, as I want to be on the road for May.
A main loom to my own design will probably be next winter's project.
However, I have done my own dash loom and added a few features along the way.

Simon.

RE: Main fuse location

On the std GD loom the main fuse normally winds up at the top of the footwell next to the relays.

RE: Main fuse location

Hi Guys, the only fuses I know about are the ones in the multiway fuse holder which fits on to the bulkhead with the wires coming from behind. I don't recall any "main" fuse in the feed from the battery or starter solenoid to the fuseholder. Am I missing something here? Trigger.
