GD Body-off & on

Hi Guys,

I recently acquired a GD 427 Euro, which as I anticipated, is fantastic.:tu

I am planning to remove the body so I can familiarise myself with all aspects of the car and give it a thorough check-over etc. I am sure you hardened GD builders don’t give this sort of thing a second-thought but I find the prospect of removing and replacing the body a little daunting. I would be really grateful for an idiots guide in the form of any tips or pointers you can give me, and any advice on specific routines to follow. If anybody is planning to take there body off or put it back on in the near future I would be more than happy to travel lend a hand, I’m based in the West Midlands

Thank you.

Mclaren

RE: GD Body-off & on

Couldn't be easier.

Remove the roll bars, presuming you have 2 of them, 3 allen bolts on each roll bar.

undo the 16 odd body to chassis location bolts.

Do you have the hydraulic couplings on the brake and clutch feeds, if so just undo them.

Loosen the gaiter for the gear stick.

Unplug the wiring harness, and check for other wires which go from body to engine bay, there might be one or two.

Disconnect the fuel line near the boot, not forgetting to check that the tank is empty.

Then lift. :tu :tu :tu :tu :tu :tu

My Son had a toy steering wheel which he used to spin furiously, making loads of go-faster noises, leaning into all the tight corners, perhaps running the government feels a bit like that. You make all the noises, but when you stop you haven't really gone anywhere.

.....& you need 4 people to lift the body ideally, one at each corner, & none of them wimps!

Cheers

Oh, and don't forget to remove the steering shaft (twixt rack and Column) either :tu Otherwise it won't budge.

Earth leads are the favourite for forgetting - I'm now expert at re-soldering the lugs on

Throttle cable

Heater pipes

Dead easy though

Cheers

Jim

& have 4 DIY hernia kits to hand as this will be going head high. Make sure you don't wipe out the dizzy or aircleaner on lifting clear! An hydraulic lift is ideal!
