Wiring the number plate light

Two questions:

1) There are three wires included for wiring the number plate light. I only have two terminal on the actual light itself - where does the third wire attach?

2) I am trying, for neatness sake, to run the wire inside the boot lid. I have made one hole near the hinge and another near the boot catch, but am having (much) difficulty in threading the wire through. I have managed to get a piece of copper wire through (the earth from some T&E) but when I attached the light wires to it, I couldn't pull it back again.

Any suggestions?

RE: Wiring the number plate light

Managed to get the cable through in the end. Drilled another hole (which turned out to be superfluous) but by wrapping the end in some aluminum tape and twisting it to a point, I got it through...

I think both red/black wires go into one terminal - can someone confirm this?

RE: Wiring the number plate light

Yes they do!
Red/black are both for the positive terminal.

If you don't connect them both, one of your tail lights won't work
That threw me a bit when I was testing things as I went along.

RE: Wiring the number plate light

The lights come with bullets already plugged in - they are huge!! (a 3mm hole at the bottom...) How the hell am I supposed to fill these with solder, or should I just use some conventional crip terminals?

RE: Wiring the number plate light

Double the wire over if only inserting a single wire. Easy as that

RE: Wiring the number plate light

OK, that's fitted. Didn't realise (until I read the build manual) that the bolts on the back of the number plate light are too short. Used some big old M6 bolts I had lying around - overkill maybe, but people mistake the light for the boot handle (I know I have on other people's cars...) so I'm sure it won't hurt.

Bit peeved about the fixing screw - I remember reading that it was an item that SVA might have a problem with, but wondered why. Now I see... someone had thoughtfully included a dome headed slotted screw, but that isn't long enough and isn't a metric fitting, so I've had to temporarily put the "dangerous" hex head back in - be careful, it could take your arm off...

I cut the wire leading to the number plate light so I can remove th boot if needs be - I wired in two spade terminals and appropriate receptacles. Only just remembered to use male/female the different way round on live and earth so it can only be connected one way...

RE: Wiring the number plate light

Here is the result - I need to tidy the way the cable is attached to the boot hinge, but I want to paint the hinge first...

RE: Wiring the number plate light

Robin
Now that you have done all that wiring work I'm going to throw a spanner in the works. There is a way to conceal every bit of wiring to the number plate light. Firstly it goes inside the hinge (near the pivot end), out through the square hinge plate directly into the space between the boot skins, around the raised rib as you have done as far as the boot lock and then up to the light. It's a bit of a fiddle but worth it. If you want more detail e-mail me or give me a call. I could bring mine to show you at the weekend if you like. Any excuse for a blast.

Regards:tu

RE: Wiring the number plate light

I think I know what you mean. I think I might have cut the wires a bit short to do that now (although I'm sure I could get hold of some more wire from somewhere...). I'm working this weekend, unfortunately, otherwise it would be great to meet you.

I'm in the Gatwick area (details on the owners forum) - whereabouts are you?

I'm about 5 miles north of Lewes. I'd post some pictures but there's nothing to see!}( }( }(
