Getrag gearbox

Hi Guys,

Has anyone done any work or know anything about Getrag gearboxes out of a Jaguar XJ40/XJS. Everyone I talk to says they are virtually bulletproof, but I'm a bit reluctant to just clean it up and fit only to find a problem later on.

I talked to a company called Competition Transmissions who said that they could do a strip and re-build for £160 plus any parts. Has anyone any experience of this company.

Re: Getrag gearbox

hi rich

im fitting a getrag from a jag, linked to a 351w 450hp motor.
Atfer taking advice all i have done is cleaned/painted it.

be aware that some getrags from BMW's have a built in bellhousing, which in my case was is no good as i have to use a ford bellhousing and mating plate.
I presume you will need either ford or chevy bellhousing

Re: Getrag gearbox

Hi Richard

Never stripped one down as the BMW 7 series Getrag I have connected to a 360 bhp Chevy was sold to me for £150 and sold as all good, the chap I got mine from told me if I did want it checking and overalling it would cost me another £70. I am very happy with mine.

My mate has also got a Jag Getrag connected to a 420 bhp Chevy without any problems and he drives it very hard.

You can buy 5 Getrags for the price of a Tremec.

Re: Getrag gearbox

I had CTS rebuild my getrag from a bmw 7 series, fitted to a 383 chevy

They charged about what you qouted for the labour.

If it only needs seals etc its cheap enough, but gears if they are no good can be expensive.

Have them split and inspect , then give you a parts cost before they repair.

I had no problems with the box, nor their work.

Re: Getrag gearbox

I'm also using a Getrag from an XJS on a 383 striker with "adequate" bhp, didn't do anything to it apart from clean it and i'ts as smooth as a baby's wotsit.

When you source one make sure you get the propshaft as well so you have all the correct splines and flanges

Re: Getrag gearbox

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the re-assurance re Getrag. I was going to splash out on a Tremec but mght change my mind with such good feedback from all the guys.

Did you buy the adapter plate etc from AK?

What have you done to your 351W, I am just about to buy a load of Edelbrock parts from Repower but intend sticking to the Performer package c/w heads. I was considering the RPM but it won't fit under the GD bonnet. Or do you know different?
