| Jag. Rear Brake Calipers I wonder if anyone has experience of working on the calipers of a Jag XJ6 Mk II rear end? I have such a set up on my KCC Cobra and I need to service the calipers but the thought of stripping the complete rear end off the car a) terrifies me and b) terrifies me! There is a possibility there may be a removeable panel behind the seats giving access to the calipers but before I go ripping carpet off bodywork I thought I'd seek guidance from someone who may have tackled the job. All assistance warmly welcomed! Thanks in anticipation, Laner |

| Re: Jag. Rear Brake Calipers What do you need to do to your calipers ? What are the symptoms ? Get the car up high enough and theres not much you cant do given a preponderance to lots of swearing and profanity....and you may get skinned knuckles!! Cheers, Tony

| Re: Jag. Rear Brake Calipers Thanks for the response Tony - the reason for needing to look is the rear brakes stuck 'on' after a particularly urgent braking episode. They eventually freed themselves off and I suspect the pistons in the calipers are in need of some TLC and almost certainly the seals will need replacing. Having had a look underneath I don't see any way of accessing the calipers properly without dropping the rear end (no thanks) or possibly through a panel behind the seats. Laner |

| Re: Jag. Rear Brake Calipers Buggar, I was hoping it was just the pads or handbrake that needed attention. Looks like it will have to be a diff out job, are there any Club members nearby that have experience of taking a diff out of a completed car that could either talk you through it or help if necessary. Perhaps it could make a good technical article for Snake Talk. Cheers, Tony

| Re: Jag. Rear Brake Calipers Richard I thought the advantages of being a GD owner was that a 1 hour body removal would simplify jobs like this. ![]() So its not just us AK, Dax, etc, etc owners that have to do major body surgery to get at the rear brakes. ![]()

| Re: Jag. Rear Brake Calipers I to had a problem with the jag calipers on my SRV8, and after a week or so looking at the epic task of dropping the whole back end, I went for it. Not having experiance with this job, and with the pivot pins seized, I decided to cut the buggers off and replace with new ones on rebuild. With the hubs, drive shafts off, it was easy to support the diff and undo the four retaining bolts on top. Tell a lie, I couldn't undo one of the drive shaft / diff nuts, so the drive shaft on one side was still connected. After grazing every knuckle on my hands carrying out this operation, I eventually acheived the task. As someone has already mentioned, the only way to get the back end back in place is by passing the pivot pins through two holes cut in the boot. If you are careful, two holes of sufficient diameter can be drilled through the boot, (spare wheel carrier in my case), and upon completion you can seal the holes with two rubber grommets of correct diameter siliconed in place. The only real problem I had was in replacing the drive shaft UJ's, I don't have a workshop, just a lock up garage, so I attempted to replace the UJ's in the dining room of my flat, not good practise ! In the end I did the job at Kelvin Griffiths garage, about 4 miles away where he showed me how to clean score marks on the drive shaft UJ recesses. If you have not replaced UJ's before I would advise you to get someone with the knowledge to show you how to do one first prior to you attempting it your self. Finally, don't forget to wire everything up before putting the assembly back together, an access hole cut behind the passenger and driver seats will expedite handbrake adjustment, wiring up diff retaining nuts, and future pad renewal, (I have locktited mine in place until I get time to wire them up. Finally put new disk pads on the rear, so you can shim out the disks equidistant to each side of the caliper. If you are stuck on anything give me a shout, and I will pass on any heuristic knowledge I gained in doing the job. Cheers Tony |
