Re-using Jag nuts & bolts.

Your opinions on the following greatly welcomed......

Do you think that it is safe to reuse most of the bolts etc from my jag bits, obviously bolts etc with signs of damage will be replaced but most have just head rust with clean threads. Some have slight rust to threads (not sure what to do with those) I had thought about doing the following.

1) Degrease.
2) Maybe get the heads lightly blasted to remove surface rust. (or use a wire brush!)
3) Degrease again with POR15 Marine clean.
4) Submerge in POR15 metal ready (eats rust and coats with zinc phoshate.
5) Oil and store.
6 )Reuse.

What do you all think.

Also do I need the upper wishbone rubber bump stops on a GD?

Cheers

Andy,

buy all new nuts, Places such as WARDS sell them all, and to the overall cost its not worth the worry when your doing 70mph+, whether those old reused nuts are going to stay tight.

Re: Re-using Jag nuts & bolts.

andy,

bolts are a lot tougher than nuts, and unless they are in bad shape you should be ok to re-use them. Things like caliper bolts should be fine to reuse.

Re: Re-using Jag nuts & bolts.

Rich,

Yeah, thinking again on the subject I realised that if I pitched up at my local dealer with an old jag and asked then to change my discs or calipers etc they would just reuse the old bolts, Im goiing to price up for new ones anyway and see what the price difference is. New disc bolts and washers weigh in at £22.

What did you think to my reconditioning plan for the bolts, using POR15 metal ready etc?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Re-using Jag nuts & bolts.

I replated and de-embrittled all the special bolts(dif mounting and caliper bolts) on my axle all the rest I replaced with stainless.
