Fuel Pump Problem

I have a problem fitting the mechanical fuel pump to the 350 Engine.. Well, actually 2 problems...!!!! I have also included a few pics to try explain also...

1) In the engine, there is a space for the mech fuel pump, sort of shaped like the end of a terraced house... In the centre of this is a maybe 10mm rod, which I understand bobs in and out and makes the attached fuel pump, actually pump, doing this by pressing an arm on the fuel pump... Well, on my fuel pump, the arm that does the pumping would appear to protrude out of the pump by maybe 1.5" or so.... and when I press that arm in as far as possible, the arm is protruding out of the pump by say abou 1".... The rod part of the engine that makes the pump work, is almost flush with the mating face of the fuel pump hole... So I cannot get the fuel pump any closer to the engine than about 1.5"....

2) The fuel pump, even if it were to fit easily into the engine hole would be way too close to the brake pipes and chassis member to be comfortable. It probably will not even fit at all..!!!

Anyone with an AK any suggestions for me???

Goldie

Chuck it in the bin, buy a blanking plate for the hole and buy a Carter Electric fuel pump from Real Steel.

Goldie

I didn't attempt to fit one as Ken said they where very tight on the chassis rail, the Carter I have is fitted to the side of the gearbox, you can't hear it and it copes with 355 Chevy and Holley 750 vac secondary without any problem. :thumb: :thumb: and reasonably priced at about £50 :thumb: :thumb:

Re: Fuel Pump Problem

When you fit an electrical pump like a Carter, be sure to wire it through a relay which is activated by the oil pressure switch, then, in the event of the worst possible accident ( you unconscious and unable to do anything) the fuel pump will stop when the engine does.

You may well need an momentary over-ride switch somewhere to help you start the engine to begin with.

Re: Fuel Pump Problem

Goldie, I know I asked this question before and I got some positive feedback. I therefor ordered a Holley machanical that arrived the day before I had to leave for France. I am now back home and I should know by tomorrow if it fit or not. My AK is left hand drive so I don't have to worry about the break pipes but I still have to stay clared from the chassis member!

Ps. I would hate it, if it turns out that my father was right when he told me to go for an electrical fuel pump!

Re: Fuel Pump Problem

I used an inertia switch with the electric pump, any bangs or crashes and it cuts the pump, be super safe and use with Wilfs preassure switch cut off. :thumb:

Re: Fuel Pump Problem

Get a holly oil pressure fuel switch, easy to fit, also has a supply from the solenoid so pump starts straight away, then the oil pressure takes over and keeps the contacts closed. Oil pressure drops cuts out the electric pump.
All thats required is a "T" with your oil pressure guage plumbed in as well.

Regards

Steve

Hi Wilf how the devil are you?

Re: Fuel Pump Problem

Enough about electrical and back to the mechanical ones...

I mounted my Holly (polished aluminium one from Summit) today and it fitted perfectly. I forgot the digital camera but ~ 10mm from the engine mount and ~20mm above the chassis member. That was the only thing that worked out in the garage today...
