Oil capacity

What's the oil capacity of a 350 SBC with standard sump (including) filter. I have a very shiny chrome aftermarket dipstick which I am convinced is showing the incorrect oil level

Re: Oil capacity

I guess this is of little help, but i reckoned on 5 litres not being enough, and 10 litres being enough for the initial fill, and having some left for top ups, so i bought 2 gallons of 20w50

I managed to get about 7 litres in before the level got to the top of the dipstick mark, but this included filling the remote Mocal oil cooler, thermostat and related pipework.

I'm guessing it may need a dash more once its been run, as some of the oil will 'hang up' in the heads, cams etc. (Its already been run in the US, but i dont know how much trouble they went to to drain the oil)

Re: Oil capacity

You'd be surprised how little oil it takes to fill an oil cooler system. I guess it depends on pipe leghts and bores.
Typically an engine will need about 0.5l more to fill from completely dry as opposed to a drain and refill with a new filter.
I think mine takes about 6 litres but I can't remember for sure.
Again it depends which of the many sump variants you have.

Re: Oil capacity

Thank's for that, 5.5 / 6.5 litres is the conclusion I've come to from searching elswhere. It may be worth noting that on my super shiny "chrome dress up" dip stick the "full mark" was reached with just 3.5 litres........hence the dip in oil pressure on heavy braking
