although it could be shutting you down due to normal under
bonnet fumes
What about a cut of of fuel in the event of an engine bay fire . To often I see fuel being being ignited by hot exhaust manifold.

I do like the thinking but probably best to find something other than modifying a smoke alarm. They use a small radioactive source inside the smoke sensor.
