Spring Compressor (Notts/Derby)

Hi all,

Does anyone in the Notts/Derby area have a spring compressor I could borrow so that I can complete the strip down of my donor axles?

The scrappy oxy'd everything except the coil spings

TIA

Chris

Re: Spring Compressor (Notts/Derby)

I cannot remember how the set up is on a Jag strip down, but when fitting springs to a Landrover I have used small ratchet straps to compress a few links of the spring - just release gently! Does not damage the finish and pretty flexible in application!

Re: Spring Compressor (Notts/Derby)

Don't know what i was thinking last night ( too much drink ) I do have a set of spring com pressers but I am 99% sure they won't fit. As the scrap yard never oxy'd the springs and if you can't easily get someone to do this for you, your best bet is to use an angle grinder on them BUT BE VERY VERY CAREFUL Don't cut them with the disk at 90deg as you are likely to be in big trouble when they go as the spring is likely to grad the disk with who knows what sort of consequences. Use the flat of the disk to reduce the thickness of the spring at one point ,when you think it is going to go either hit it with a big hammer or very carefully keep going with the grinder but watch out for when it goes as there is quite some force there, you will have to do each spring at least twice

Re: Spring Compressor (Notts/Derby)

Can I add a little tip with regards to using spring compressors?

I hate fitting/removing front springs as I have heard so many horror stories about the compressors slipping and some poor sod ending up with a broken jaw - or worse...

So what I do when fitting springs back in is to get some brown packing tape, and tape the compressors into place on the spring (Use a lot of tape!) - yes this does mean a little more work when it comes to removing the compressor (It also limits damage to the springs paint finish), but now the compressor cannot slip - making the job a damn sight safer!

Oh and always use goggles!

Regards
CeeJay.

Re: Spring Compressor (Notts/Derby)

Thanks for the repilies. I've got to get a welder in now as the guy I bought my TVR gearbox off failed to mention in the ebay description that the bellhousing was cracked. Look slike somone tried to shove the started motor through it from the engine side

So I'll get the springs oxy'd at the same time as I don't fancy any body piercings.

Cheers
