Power steering?

Hi Fellow Snakers,

At last after nearly 20 years of dreaming of building a cobra...oh, and two kids later, I have finally begun the build of an Ak427 (with a little persuasion from the members of the South West Club.. thanks Martin and Mike!):thumb:

The BIG dilemma is...do we have power steering or do I make the other half struggle to park the Snake (that's if she can find the keys!)?
There appears to be a big split in opinions with the few people that I have spoken to and I was wondering if anyone else could point out the good and the bad points for both.

Thanks for your help

Mickeyg

Re: Power steering?

Mickey,

Built the first AK without power steering but the next one will have power assistance. When the car is moving you certainly dont need it but it will be a great aid to the Mrs when shes driving you back from the pub.

Cheers,

Tony

Re: Power steering?

Mickey, I've had power steering on a TR7/8 fitted for the same reasons you describe, quite nice I must say and not too light, driven a Cobra with it fitted as well. As Dave says don't think its really necessary but it could always be fitted latter. From personal experience if you have some half way serious tune and a proper clutch your other half will never be able to drive it anyway Osgood

I would respectfully disagree Tony, its surprising how much faster and easier you can negotiate tight bends and roundabouts, the whole car feels much more confident. :thumb: :thumb:

Re: Power steering?

I had a chat with Gary at Dax and he was fitting P/S to the new demo car. it was a clever unit that can be programmed for feel and at what speed it comes into action. It fitted in the column so used origional rack etc. I don't know if this is going to be offered to joe public yet

Re: Power steering?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the feedback. I had asked for the power steering package when I placed the order, with Ken at AK, but after a chat with my best mate (who owns a Crendon without power steering), he asked why I had opted for it. It got me wondering whether I did really need it or not. As for the wife, she said that she was there at the conception and was also going to be there for the birth (first run), as well as driving me back from the club meets. She had best get working on that left leg calf muscle then I guess because its a long drive home.
Thanks again guys

Re: Power steering?

I believe the dax PS option is an EPAS unit from a corsa, just replaces the existing column

Re: Power steering?

What sort of price would one have to pay to get P/S fitted to a cob?
Ballpark sort of figure will do. Just to get things into perspective.
I know Madgwicks do a conversion but have no idea as to cost.
