Side or under

Hello all,
I have had the dream of building / owning a Cobra for as long as I can remember! Whilst chatting with a colleague a few weeks ago I realised that I have less time now than I had 15 years ago when I didn't have enough time to build one! ... So, I bought a completed car (birthday present from the wife). It is an SRV8 with a 350 Chevy..... I'm still learning to drive it...and probably always will be! I do have a question that I would appreciate some views on; It is running with underslung pipes which catch on many uneven road surfaces, I am considering side pipes - should I do it? what are the pros and cons?

Re: Side or under

Firstly welcome and hope you have fun with the car and that you arre able to get along to the many club meets that take place. There you'll get to know the plusses and minuses of what you are considering and also get some other tips along the way. If you don't know where your local regional meet is contact your regional rep mentioned in Snake Torque magazine.
Now pros and cons of under vs side pipes:
pros:
Quieter, don't burn your legs getting in/out, quality of sound is nicer (hear 8 cylinders not just the 4 next to your ear). Quieter - it can be tough sometimes getting sidepipes through the SVA without special measures
cons:
Depending on teh model, limited ground clearance, doesn't look so flash or authentic depending on how you execute the sidepipes

Personally I have under installation but mine run up inside the chassis so I don't have clearance probs. This is not possible on all kits, incl the SRV8

HTH and have fun with your car. Had mine over 10 years and am still learning....

Re: Side or under

Following on from Nigel's comments, once the revs approach mid range and above you will hear all 8 pots on side pipes.
Access is a doddle also - no crawling around underneath.
If stainless (or chrome) it's something else to polish - you may regard this as a plus or a minus point.
That's some birthday present - enjoy. :thumb: :thumb:

Re: Side or under

As far as noisier goes once you reach 40-MPH it is completely irrelevant as the wind noise takes over. :thumb:

Re: Side or under

The logical answer is underslung - the emotional is sidepipes. Like sidepipes, their devotees make most noise! Pick your prejudice................

Re: Side or under

Being the owner of an SRV8 with small block chevy, and side pipes, I can only say there is only one option, mount the speakers on the side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Side or under

I got an SRV8 and I have underslungs.

I refuse to get into anymore arguments on which is best.
It's your choice and remember it.
However I would like sidepipes but a) I can't find the ones I want and b) I'm skint.
I have not seen any that I like the look of so until I can raise the cash to get them made it's underslungs I have and will remain to like 'cos without them I can't drive it.:thumb:

Re: Side or under

UNDERSLUNGS...

With crossover box the engine breaths better = more power.

Solution for grounding = turn up the shocks or get stiffer springs.
