Hello to all and a starter for 10

A casual glance at a kit car mag and the evil has entered my head! Now I'm looking at the best part of £25k and can't wait to get started. I've been through all the manufacturers and more or less settled on a GD (pending a visit) so I now need to get some bits.

Decided to start with an engine rebuild and getting a Chevy 350 for that but before I purchase I've been trying to get my head around what needs to be done to avoid the dreaded Q plate. I'm not after a new reg so I understand that if the engine or donor parts can have their age proven I'll get a plate for that year.

What I would like most though is to be able to use a black / silver plate which I believe are only allowed on cars or a certain age.

At last - got to the question. Has anyone managed to get one of these plates and if so, how.

Thanks for any help and here's looking forward to my build.

You could try and get a donor already registered as a historic vehicle ( manufactured prior to the mid 70's I believe) and use that donor reg.

Otherwise there are a number of ner do wells and charlatans ( you know who you are) that purchase silver on black reg plates at Kit Car shows for use "display purposes only" and then "forget" to replace them with the white/yellow variety ...........

The former would be difficult, the latter is illegal................

Cheers,

Tony

As far as I am aware so long as you get the relevant paperwork with a doner vehicle, then use the requisite number of parts from it ie axles etc then it is possible to get the right reg, mine is , and the added bonus is that you wont have to pay road tax either, unless theyve changed the rules again that is.

Re: Hello to all and a starter for 10

You have various routes:

1) Buy a GD Euro, use all new parts and up to one recon part, (ie the engine) and get an 06 plate

2) Buy a GD Jag, ie a 1983 A reg, use all of the relevant parts from the jag and your cobra will get an age related A plate. You can then put black & silver plates on and hope plod doesn't care when he sees a post 1972 registered car with B&S plates.

3) As above, but you then buy any registration that is older than 1973, ie 1972 L plate or older and put black & silver plates on. PLod is unlikely to notice as it's legal to have a B&S plate on a pre 1973 car... And hey the cobra LOOKS like a 60s car, right?

4) As 2, but buy a pre 1973 Jag and you'll get a legal and valid plate you can get B&S with. Problem being i'm not sure how many models of this age can be used with the kit...

5) Buy the kit, use lots of parts form lots of cars, ADMIT TO IT, fail to produce any form of V5 and you'll get a Q plate.

Think that covers all bases...

Thanks for all the info. Hmm, Grease Monkey's number 3 or a life or crime.

We'll see!

Also, is it me or is the time a bit screwy on this site?

Server time is fine, it'll either be your PC, or more likely where the server thinks you are in the world. Go into your user control panel *User CP on menu above) and check your settings..
