Virgin?

Hi Cobra community,

Lotus man myself.....

Obviously a bit of a Petrol head... I wish I hated cars!

Wife & I are looking to purchase a Cobra. I have been doing lots of research.

It'll be another toy, not doing many miles, so looking for a tax free motor, preferably with a Chevy small block, would consider a very nice Rover V8. Cars... a Dax, AK, not sure...what do you reckon? It's not replacing the Elise and I am not loaded! so it's got to be reasonably priced.

On a final note, we were at Exeter at the weekend, impressed with the AK.

Regards to all

TPH

Do some reading on this forum and you'll find this has been discussed many time before. What Cobra should I buy? How much should I spend?

In short, it depends what you want it for and between 12K and 30K pounds.

Where is Glorious Devon? Is it anywhere near Bloody Wet Devon?

welcome to the madhouse (madder than usual today LOL) and enjoy deciding which one; a very enjoyable stage of the process!!!
Ask questions, use the search button (I think the top questions are probably which one? Ford or Chevy? Insurance?)
Oh and there are no correct answers; just the ones that you like LOL

Assistance...

Chaps,

Thank you.

For the NZ chap, Live in north Devon U.K. Sometimes wet, always glorious, great for driving! Especially across Exmoor.

I think the "what type of car to get" is going to be a difficult decision and will take slightly longer than anticipated.

I'll look through the forums [...]

Regards

Hi TPH

Did you come see us on the stand over the weekend at Exeter?

You might ghave seen Anthony's car on AHP stand - a good Pilgrim with Rover V8

Or Neil O's car in car park
An excellent well sorted DAX

Both up for sale and both locally known.

What a friendly bunch of chaps... and girlies?

My wife (AKA Mrs Petrol Head (equally enthusiastic - yes I know I am lucky!)) & I viewed all the Cobras at the Exeter show, including the two beauties from Plymouth?....Stunning...

The stand was surrounded by equally admiring enthusiasts, so I did not get the chance to chat with the Devonian fellows. Much to our disappointment.

Anyway, I (we) would love to attend one of the meetings and see some of the cars. I am sure you'll (the cobra community) will be able to guide me (us) in the right direction, with regard choice of beast.

I have read many threads, with one bloke saying he had sold his Lotus to fund a Cobra.

I am buying for different reasons.
  • Noise of a V8.
  • The aesthetic appeal of such a gorgeous looking car, equally as pretty as an Elise (female side of me coming out....sorry chaps).
  • Not interested in track days.
  • Appeal of owning something different with a cult following.
  • Like being different!
  • Both of us love driving (for pleasure), that's when I can get the wife out of the drivers seat!
Although reasonably handy with a spanner, I do not want to go through
the hassle of creating one. I have done this having fully restored (with fellow enthusiasts assistance) a 'Gold Cup' Concourse winning Series 1 RS Turbo (B47 YOD). Done it, never used it because it was too clean, sold it, bought a Sapphire Cosworth 4X4, and then sold to the RSOC as the raffle car in 2004 (K75 DJH) another minter. Bought a S1 Elise..love it!

So from restoration/rebuilding to 'tinkering'... cleaning & polishing...

That said, I am a bit 'an*l' in the aesthetics department, so looking for a car of a similar prepared standard as the two local Cobras. Anyway, its got to be as clean as my Lotus! No it's not Azure blue or Norfolk Yellow...

Anyway, enough of my ramblings... back to searching the forums.

I'll see some of you soon and thanks again for the sound advice. It is sincerely appreciated.

Regards

TPH

If you don't do track days then you could count out the Ram and the GD; both are great cars but do compromise originality for handling. That leaves a Dax or an AK as the 'middle ground' both good, both will fulfill your needs. If you want to go cheaper, consider the Sumo. If you want to go a little upmarket and closer to the original consider the Crendon and the Hawk. Don't forget to look at the 289 body cars, much prettier than the 427.

Only joking about Devon, had some great camping hols there over the years.

My Son had a toy steering wheel which he used to spin furiously, making loads of go-faster noises, leaning into all the tight corners, perhaps running the government feels a bit like that. You make all the noises, but when you stop you haven't really gone anywhere.
