Not sure what the capacity of the water system is on the Dax. It has very long pipe runs and a big radiator so it takes a lot. I brought a 5 litre can of antifreeze and poured all of this in first. I then topped up with fresh water and left it at that. It may be slightly stronger than the normal 50-50 mix but it won't do any harm.

Gearbox oil for the Tremec gearbox is a good quality Automatic transmission fluid or ATF.

Oil for the motor is Valvoline 20/50. The Chevy is a fairly old design engine and they like thick oil. The Valvoline is a good quality, if slightly expensive oil. It can also be hard to get hold off as it's not stocked in many places.
In theory any good quality 20/50 oil will be good for it. I run my Range Rover on Duckhams 20/50

Craig.

Ive just taken a few photos of engine etc before it goes in on Sunday. We have more in albums so shall fish them out and scan them for later. The hoist was from a place on Ebay - 2ton hoist for £99 plus delivery. We tried to hire one but they wanted £66 inc delivery so we decided to buy one instead!

Welcome to the Club and glad to hear Paul has the all clear

I believe yoru Dax holds around 22 litres of coolent.

As mentioned before, Dave Brookes is THE man to ask, I'm sure he will correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Paul

Thank you for your best wishes. Paul is getting there slowly but surely and for the past couple of weeks has found the strength to start on the Cobra again!

All your help is valuable to us.

I just told him that it takes 22 litres and he said thank god he asked because when he went out yesterday he got 5 litlres of antifreeze but the man in the shop said 2litres should do it! Paul is now laughing at the 2litre suggestion!

Im sure he shall pop on here later as he is wondering about the wiring to the HEI Distributor. What colour wire goes to where? Im sure he shall ask the full question later.

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN

Hi Paul

Thanks for the good wishes etc.

The next thing my good husband has asked is the wiring to the HEI distributor. Is there only two wires to go to the distributor and no loop needed to be connected? As the wiring booklet suggests a loop? Because of having no coil.

Thank you again

Diane

The white cable which is a loop was removed on my car. All you need for the HEI is one live cable from the ignition switch (white) and one cable going back to the rev counter.

The loop is in place to use on a standard distributor with a separate coil.

Craig.

Paul & Diane, Hi.
I see you have some photos now, engine looks good.
A couple of pointers.
1. I see you have the gearbox rear mounting plate attached to the box, a tip I got from the famous Dave Brookes was to mount it underneath the chassis and make up a couple of spacers to put the box back at the correct height, this allows the gearbox to be split and removed in the future without having to remove the engine.
2. Your hoist may not be long enough to install the engine from the front. Do it from the side , you may have to jack the car and move an axle stand mid lift as you move the hoist into position but it is easily done.

Good luck and as has been said this is the place to build a Cob, you could do it here without the manual

Toddy

Hi Toddy

Thank you for your help. I have told this all to Paul and he said a big thank you too.

The hoist has an extending arm and he has measured it all up and seems to be able to go from the front but on the big day WHO KNOWS lol!

Hi Diane and Paul, I have the same hoist (from a place up towards Southend?) and it got my engine and gearbox out in one go. The hoist did run away on it's own afterwards though and fell over with the engine still attached. But I do have a slightly sloping drive. Hope you didn't/don't have any such problems.

I also had a bit of cancer a few years back and that chemo is not at all pleasant, glad to hear you both got through it OK.

Andi.

Thank you for your message and we got the hoist at a place in Wickford. Did you go pick it up yourself? If you did then you know how difficult it was to get into the place. If you missed the turn off you were buggered and had to go back round again to try and catch the road before you went right by it again!

I shall tell Paul about you using the same hoist.

I hope you are fully recovered from your cancer. I know from Paul how terrible the chemo is and believe me the carers go through it with them all the way.

Paul is still working outside at the moment getting the wheels onto the car before putting the engine in this Sunday coming.

He shall be shattered once he comes in and then it takes about 2 or three days for him to feel human again.

Thank you for your good wishes

Diane & Paul
