Another Newbie

Hi Guys,
I've just bought a Dax Tojeiro. To be honest I'm still trying to work out what I've got. It was built between 90 and 92. It is on Jag running gear with SD1 gearbox and RV8. The wheels are halibrand replicas with one spinner missing....
The car is a little grubby in places but drives and handles really well which is what sold the car to me.

I do have some questions for you:-
1) Would my chassis be a de-dion? How can I tell?
2) The car is seriously low to the ground. Do you use a low profile jack to get under it?
3) The chrome on the nearside side pipe is rusted. Can they be re-chromed?
4) Anyone know where I can get a spinner?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum. Good choice (sorry Tinka!)
Here's my 2p worth:
1) Doubtful, the de-dion chassis is a more recent development. Yours pre-dates it by a good 10 years.
2) A scissor jack or small trolley jack should easily fit. Just how low is it?
3) Probably, but it would be expensive, and if its rusting on the outside, the innards are probably not far behind. Better in the long run to replace.
4) Image Wheels can supply.
Hope this helps. Good luck and enjoy your new toy!

Thanks for the reply.

I live quite close to the Grasshopper in Westerham. Is there a regular meet there? Anyone able to advise when the next one is?

Thx.....

Hi Ted,

This Sunday I think.

If you want to have a closer look at that rear axle and handbrake I'm just down in Tunbridge Wells, can't be far if you're near the Grasshopper.

Andi.

Hi Andi,
I'm in West Wickham in Kent. Not far from you at all. Unfortunately I'm not around on Sunday, but would appreciate meeting you at some point on Saturday or Monday. I'd like someone who knows to tell me a bit about the car I've bought. Are you available?

Cheers,
Mark

Ted hi and welcome to the mad house. It would appear that you have a Dax of the same era as mine. Any chance of posting some pictures of the beast?

You say your Cob was built 1990. In which case it could have one of three chassis. a) Standard ladder chassis, b) Extended foot well ladder chassis or c) a Super tube chassis. The De Dion chassis did not come about to around 2000.

There was also an option of a rear anti roll bar fitment and later a lower shock mounting replacement to change the angle of the front coil over shock units in a bid to improve handling.

Being fitted with an SD1 RV8 it is most likely to have an LT77 5 speed box and a 3.31:1 Jag XJ diff. You may well also have a modified Triumph Dolomite steering rack with Jag rod ends fitted.

Has your car been fitted with Ford master and servo with Jag brakes? Not too sure when this mod came about but mine, circa 1989/1990, is fitted with an E Type Jag master cylinder with remote servo unit connect to xj / xjs brakes.

Have you any history with the car and what about bills for parts etc.

Welcome Mark

I remember the Cob you've bought as being pretty quick, with a 'used appeal' (They call it patina).

I also remember it felt like an old friend the moment you get in it.

Get out there and enjoy your new old friend.

Marks car has been through 7-Indulgence in its time, so obviously well looked after.

Hi Guys,
I've tried to attach some pics of the cob. Not sure if they'll come out.
I am really enjoying driving the car. It is quite quick. I'm wondering if the RV8 has been tuned in some way.
The master cylinder has the reservoir mounted on the top of the servo. Looks like a sod to get to!
I went to Andis place the other day (Thanks Andi) and we compared the cars to some degree and picked up a few obvious differences. The first was the brace over the tunnel which my car doesn't have. Secondly the steering rack is mounted differently. We also noted that my car has a dolomite steering column and switches.

It has a few faults to fix:-
No high beam
No hand brake
Leaky diff
Door cards hanging off
Door handles missing
Wing mirror missing
Spinner missing
Split steering rack gaitor
Needs a bloody good clean inside and out.

Should keep me busy!
Cheers,
Mark
