Help with my kit choice

Hi – I’m a total Newbie to this forum and to Cobras …

I guess I’m a born again biker for the kit car ilk … having built a manta ray Beach Buggy back in late 70’s.

Just finished building my own house .. now have the time & need for a new for myself.

Surprisingly SWMBO is fully supportive of this – thinks it’s a good idea, even came back form shopping this week with current copies of KitCar and Which Kit car mags.

I have been looking for past couple of months ... and so far had found 2 manufacturers that seemed to stand out above the rest (to me anyway) this is Gardner Douglas & Sebring .... although I have been derided for not going for a Pilgrim SUMO.

I don’t really need or have desire to build a replica – what I want to build is a really good kit car, it’s just that the cobra seems to take my eye.

In fact the Sebring MXR seems to have all of the plus points of the Cobra plus moved the design on a little, losing overiders, adding extra lights etc.

I want to build something that oozes class, something I can obtain all the finishing touches for ... I am not trying to do a budget build, but I am also not looking to spend £50k.

Can anybody offer me any advice as to which kit I should focus on - don't get me wrong, I know no reason why ... but all part of the research before parting with a serious amount of money.

Any advice or emails welcome … feel free to give me +ve or –ve comments.Perhaps I just need to go and have a good look & test drive of both.

Are there any up * coming kit car shows I should consider going to ?

Rick

Re: Help with my kit choice

Hi Jack.

Welcome to the forum :thumb:
Firstly the Sebring is more a take off of the Healey, but still a good looking car When you say that you want to be able to get all the right bits to finish the car, I guess you mean from the kit supplier, Which I also guess is why you favour GD. Dax also supply all the parts required. As do Pilgrim. I'm not sure if anyone else does, but i'm sure someone will put me right AK supply the basics and leave you to source all the right bits yourself.
As with any kit car the end result is only as good as the time, effort and attention to detail imparted by the builder. So it really depends on you how the car ends up There are stunning examples of all the marques, and some not so, regardless of the quality of the kit.
Exeter is the next show. Go along and have a look
Good Luck. Whatever you decide on :thumb:

Re: Help with my kit choice

Here is some info from one newbie to antoher.
I have decided to go with the Pilgrim Sumo (not yet started, just about to). And regarding the finish, as you can see on their website www.pilgrimcars.com they have all the parts needed, plus there are different choices for some parts regarding of the style and quality that you want (standard or leather enterior etc). Of course, there are always parts that are standard and that can be bought everywhere like the tyres and wheels, so in those parts you have the full freedom of choice to get what you like best.

Re: Help with my kit choice

Hi Rick and welcome,
at some point we've all been at that decision stage you are at now.
In my case I'd been looking for years before deciding on Dax. :thumb:
Having made the choice I just got on with it and 30K ish later here I am. (about double what I'd originally thought), everything went top spec.
Where are you in South Wales?? You're welcome to come and crawl over mine if you like. :thumb:

Re: Help with my kit choice

Hi Rick,
I'm in Cowbridge not too far from junction 34.
As I say you are quite welcome to come over and take a good look over the Dax, and maybe a ride out. :thumb:
In the area we also have CraigH in Caerphilly with his GD. :thumb:
There are various others around the area, including Tony Evans in Tenby with his SRV8 and Kelvin also in Tenby who's building a GD.
