2 litre Sumos...

At the risk of getting laughed off the board....how many people here run the Cortina based Sumo with the Pinto engine, either modified or not? I know it's supposed to be V8 based, etc....one day maybe, but not with this chassis!

Now maybe my log in name makes sense..I'm running a stage 3 rally pinto engine, which should be producing about 125bhp at the wheels. Small, but light and still fun.

Re: 2 litre Sumos...

I dont think you will find many have that powerplant, if they did a V8 conversion would of probably been done or a high contender for a winter to do job list.

However its still a cobra and happy motoring

Re: 2 litre Sumos...

I bought mine second hand - might have been a false economy...the early chassis with the live axle won't take a V8...

Re: 2 litre Sumos...

Hi,

I live in the Netherelands and have an early mk3 sumo it's on the road since december 1996 Did 112000km with a 2.0i DOHC ford sierra engine.Still running it.
I just changed the air filter to KN filter and had a drysump put on for ground clearence.Took out the cat..It is sad to give 128 Bhp in normal setup so i think it still does. The only way i will change it is i can get my hands on a cheap cosworth 2.0 .

cheers ,Tom

Re: 2 litre Sumos...

Hi

We have a viper cortina setup and have a V6 Cosworth lump. Is there no way a V6 will fit in yours instead.
But at the end of the day, it is your car, and if it gives you please, then good luck to you.
We were looking at putting a 2.8i capri axle in eventualy to soak up the 350BHp that i want to get the beast up to.
At the traffic lights and stuck in traffic, your car will look the same as any 7litre V8, plus yours will be cheaper to run.
Best wishes

Re: 2 litre Sumos...

I've seen a black one (albeit about four years ago now) at the Northern Region meeting a the Old Corn Mill.
When I was building my Dax, and had just bolted down the engine, a neighbour of mine came over and asked what engine it was (on display at the time) and asked if it was a two litre. Thinking about it, that's a very decent engine size to put in something of this size and weight. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy your car.

Pete

Why won't it take a V8, we had a member with a MK1 Sumo with a Rover V8 under the bonnet, weight isn't a problem as the Rover V8 is lighter than a 2 litre Pinto

Re: 2 litre Sumos...

Hi,

My first cobra built with my brother was a Pilgrim Sumo Mk1, back in 1987 (still got it). I had a 2lt Pinto, then I moved to a 2.3 Ford V6. You can fit a V8, but due to the chassis rails will need to be supported in the middle and rear to stop twisting (due to the chassis rail run being so long). The Pilgrim even back then was a fine car, I love the look of the Mk1, lower in profile to Mk2/Mk3. This brings back great memories. Also get a cortina 2.3 / granada 2.3/2.6 rear axle, better ratio and takes more power.

John.
