Re: Failing the SVA

Wiring- when going across chassis edge must be protected more than just tape ie split pipe.
- Boot wiring needs to be secure
- Can't use adhesive clips in exposed areas.
Noise- 101.7 dB is too loud apply coke cans as baffles, by the way if exhausts radiused can stick out as far as you want.

Re: Failing the SVA

Have you read the thread about fuel pipe ends? This is another new one on me - I've put jubilee clips on mine, and thought it was solid enough - is that wrong?

Re: Failing the SVA

Interesting to read the posts, here are my tips.

First of all befriend an SVA inspector - seriously !. in the two month run up to my SVA test I frequently rang the test centre for advice on the sort of things that seem to get failed on and what solutions the inspectors look for, as a result I latched on to one inspector and always asked for him by name when I phoned in, I also requested the same inspector when the SVA booking was confirmed.

By the time the inspection day came we had a rapport already which does help.

None of this of course is substitute for Attention to Detail of your build. Looking through some of these postings quite a lot of fail items could have been avoided through lots of attention to detail. If in doubt about anything on your build the probability is that it will be questioned by the inspector. Also don't rush any part of the build, my car took 2 years to build. Very tempting to press on to get ready for the Summer but if it isn't realistically ready then accept that and look forward to next Summer.

My car failed on only one item and that was the very poor engineereing precision of the PILGRIM speedo daisy wheel which gave spurious readings on the Speedo test. I replaced it with the ETB wheel and got a pass.

This to me was very annoying as it is one of few parts of the build that cannot be exhaustvely checked prior to rolling road test. Yet again PILGRIM let me down.

Re: Failing the SVA

Guys

The only problem I had was a steering self centre problem. On full lock the steering would not self centre when driven away. After many phone calls to Pilgrim I had to resort to fitting a jubilee clip to the steering rack to limit the amount of lock. This with adjustments to the ride height and camber it worked a treat.

I'd recommend the Birmingham test centre. The guys there are excellent and really want you to pass.

Regards Allan

Re: Failing the SVA

re the adjustment for self centering.

the reason your car does not self centre is probably down to the caster angle being wrong, a known problem on the SUMO which is mainly down to the positioning of the nearside wishbones. The castor needs correcting otherwise you are just asking for trouble. This has to be done by shimming the top wishbone but you can't rely on guess work, you must get this done by a specialist geometry person/company who will ensure that both sides of the car are set up correctly

I would strngly advise against the Pilgrim solution of using the jubilee clip,

all the above comments made based on personal experience and having got a SUMO through SVA

Re: Failing the SVA

Just had my pilgrim through the Newcastle SVA, the reversed taper on the track rod end was questioned, all I had to do was show some documentaion that this was the design intent (showed him the manual) he was happy with that. Wipers NG had to replace the gear with a 32 tooth gear rather than the 22 tooth that was fitted. Didnt have the grill fitted, had to fit a heat shield to protect the brake master cylinder, exhaust wrap would have done the job. The dummy SVA kit supplied free from pilgrim saved a lot of time and effort, it includes various covers, mirrors, fuel caps etc.
good luck Dave

Re: Failing the SVA

Copy and paste from other thread for info -

1. End of rear nudge bar to sharp
2. No locking wire in rear brake caliper bolts
3. He pulled handbrake so hard the adjuster slipped and was now slack
4. Declared axle design weight wasnt high enough for calculated weight
