Re: Failing the SVA

Obvious comment but could we have the date of the tests (or at least the year) so that we can get some idea of what the current position on things is. This is a personal request as I want to identify the nicest possible SVA test centre!!

You have to wonder what they're thinking about when they dream all this stuff up. See

Re: Failing the SVA

I cannot agree enough with getting to know your local tester, I haven't SVA'd my Sumo......I haven't even got the body on yet but I've got to know the man in the ministry coat quite well and even he says different areas have different interpretations and 'pet hates'. He says the most common cock up is using spring washers on top of ordinary washers....not allowed apparently.

As my build progresses and I get stuck as to what is SVA friendly or not I just ask. They are more than helpful and have no problem with answering questions. At Yeading (Near Jct 3 on M4) his attitude is that he wants you to build a safe car first time round.

I've been told several times that if you just follow the build manual you can't go wrong but I am concerned about the track rod taper that people have failed on. Pilgrim did mine so we'll just have to wait and see.

Darren.

Re: Failing the SVA

Can anyone explain to me why it is objectionable to use a spring washer on top of a flat washer ( assuming this means washer, spring, nut).

Re: Failing the SVA

I know.... I had to ask. I was told that it has to do with the ministry rule book which says that a spring washer must have one face to a fixed surface and as a flat washer is not fixed and a bolt head is not fixed (as the bolt can rotate) it breaks their rules.

I felt sorry for the poor sod who put flat washers and spring washers on every bolt and failed the SVA and had to remove them.

Re: Failing the SVA

Thanks for that Darren.
I'm sure it was a rule made with good intentions but it still sounds like BO^**X to me

Re: Failing the SVA

Can somebody explain what is meant by a reverse taper on the track rod end.

Also how far in advance do you have to book the vehicle in?

I thought that I saw 6 weeks in something I read before!!

On a Sumo that uses Sierra front hubs the steering trackrod end usually goes from underneath into the hub but when used on a Sumo you have to 'reverse 'the taper in the hub so that the trackrod end can go in from the top.:thumb:
