Re: Failing the SVA

Hi Guys,
Just thought I'd let you know my fail list as just back from the SVA centre.
All in all the tester made you feel very comfortable even made us a cup of coffee and complemented me on my build quality but it failed on 13 counts mostly minor and easy to fix except the steering column.
  1. Inner seat belt mounts, wants a bigger spreader plate inside the gearbox tunnel.
  2. Handbrake cable fouling the drivershaft - Needs re-routing
  3. Fuel pipe chaffing near side Cylinder head - Cable tie
  4. Wiring loom insecure under OSR wheel arch - Fix sticky tie base with Silkoflex (The only one I missed )
  5. HT iginition system not fitted with radio suppresion - HT leads have no identification to say they are radio suppressed.
  6. Front indicator lenses too low. - Need to crank shockers up a bit more
  7. Rear reflectors incorrectly positioned - too far from outer edge of car
  8. Servo vacuum pipe made of a material insufficinetly durable and likely to fail prematurely - new braded vacuum pipe
  9. Following not radiused to 2.5mm, Washer jet, Rear reflector edges, Boot hinges, upper seat belt clasps and their nut covers.
  10. Brake pedal fouling steering shaft - Bend pedal assembly (I moved the steering column across in bulkhead to miss exhaust)
  11. Wires likely to chaffe, Over steering column and heater - cover with split conduit
  12. Steering column of inadequate strength to ensure operation of a feature designed to provide column displacement or operation of a collapsable component. - basically I need to find a better way of mounting the steering column as it flexes too much and he didnt think the column would collapse in a crash like it should. He suggested trying to mount the original Sierra bracket into my car.
  13. Gross axle weight not supplied, unable to complete weight calculations. Anyone know the answer to this one.
Going to be a bit busy for a while, anyone got any suggestions for the steering column mounts?

Re: Failing the SVA

Hello,

quite a list but all easily fixable I'm sure. Regarding the steering column:

Did you ever read this post

Classified alerts?

Its quite a bit to read but at the end has some pictures of a new bracket someone made. I think Pilgrim should be informed of this if the SVA guys are failing part of the standard kit again. Anyone else passed recently with the standard bracket?

Could I ask which of these failure points relating to parts are from parts that claim to be SVA friendly and are supplied that way. I'm suprised things like boot hinges and washer jets are failing if they are part of the standard kit.

Best of luck with the restest!!!

Cheers
Graham

Re: Failing the SVA

Graham,
Washer jet failed due to flat edge on top, came from Europa.

The Boot hinges are well known as fails, they're originally from a Hillman Imp i believe but a second pair filed down will fix it then replace when you get home. I should have known better for these.

Re: Failing the SVA

Adrian sorry to hear about your failing but I'm glad the tester was pleasant.

With the steering column your bracket should look like this (see attached pic, it's the photo that's in the long post listed above) we've had ours modified to be strengthened with the fillets down the side, the column won't flex at all now.

Did you use Pilgrim's 'SVA friendly kit' that they supply for the test?

Re: Failing the SVA

I'm also not sure why Pilgrim don't supply a modified bracket. I know many have passed with the standard item though.

I was also wondering if you could let me know what kind of spreader plate you used for the lower seatbelt mounts? We're using a modified version of the one from Europa and have cut it and are welding it to the chassis.

Re: Failing the SVA

Hi

I have my SVA booked for next Monday so some of your comments have made me go and have another look!!!!!!

Regarding the top seat belt mounts. I have used the Pilgrim supplied ones and as you say the nut cover clearly fails however, taking it off leaves the nut obviuosly exposed but recessed, and all the edges around it are less than 5mm so only have to be blunted. The inner tunnel seat belt mount spreader plate, what size did you use? I have used the Europa supplied plate with welded nut, is this going to be big enough?

I am hoping that Pilgrim get me an SVA kit in time as the date for my test (Derby) was only given me yesterday.

This seems worse than waiting for the dentist!!

Ian

Re: Failing the SVA

Good luck Ian, have you asked any local cobra owners to have a quick look round your car before sva? It might just show up something, we all get blinkered with our pride and joys.

PS make sure that when looking in the boot you can see threads protruding through the top seatbelt mounting nuts

Take the pilgrim nut covers off and find a suitable size blanking grommet and glue it in place - did the trick for me !
