Re: Failing the SVA

Guys,
Thanks for all the good advice, I agree that Pilgrim ought to be providing a decent bracket, they certainly know about it from what it seems.

Ian - As for the top seat belt mounts I am going to split a bit of rubber hose and glue it round, I might also use some Silkaflex around the nut covers just to smooth it off.
The spreader plate he wanted was a triangular shape all along the flat face where the lower mounitng hole is in 3mm plate.
I think what he is saying is very sensible, I wouldn't like to think of someone getting hurt in my car if it comes away, especially as I'm going to sell it once its on the road.

Safetyspice - Dave B reckons your just down the road, any chance of having a look at how you've done the steering column bracket and yes it is the same SVA tester you had? Sent you a PM with my mobile on it.

Rich - Where abouts is S & J as I was hopping to get the car to Stoneleigh?

As for using Pilgrims SVA kit, I haven't used a lot of their parts, I have an Autobrass screen and Dax sidepipes so there wasn't much point. The Pilgrim screens a failure as there's too many sharp edges on it unless they've changed it.

Re: Failing the SVA

Adrian,

Sent you a pm. When I read your fail points I had a sneaking feeling who the tester might be!

Re: Failing the SVA

My car failed on a couple of small things which was a supprise as I fully expected it to be a lot more as I did not read the SVA guide lines.

First thing was the Indicators on the front, I knew that the standard position would not conform to the height regs so i put the stalk type on the car but also left the original ones on as well.
Of course they failed it because if you have a light on the car it has to be working and if it works it would fail on the height, stupid or what.

Second item was the clock that I had fitted which failed on protusion of more than 9.5mm.

Both these items could have been removed on sight in about 5 mins but this was not allowed and therfore rebook had to take place.

money for the boys I think.

Anyway all done now and enjoying loads.

I think the secret is not to worry about it to much and go with the attitude of its going to fail.

Antony

Thumbs down

Booo Hoooooo.

I failed today too

Still, it was close, everything had passed until the tester took it for a spin. He did the brake test, skidded nicely, fronts locked first, all ok, then the very last thing was the self centring.........or in my case self uncentring.

Driving on full lock, hands off the wheel and it just kept going round and round in a circle. Also when going fastish on full lock there was a very slight rubbing on the lower rear edge of the body work.

Shouldn't be too hard to sort out, then back for a quick retest next week all going well. Could be a dodgy rack or too much camber...will revert with the solution.

As an aside, I took the car for a test drive the other day and it pulled violently left. After many hours of head scratching and setting the tracking to within a 1/1000000th of a milimeter, it turns out that some pillock (me) put one of the top wish bones on backwards.
I must have taken them on and off 20 times and I recon I got them right 19 times. Pete/Nick SSSSSSSSSSsssssoooooooooooo sorry for the wasted time and a big thanks for the help sorting it all out.

I know everyone says this, but I must say the SVA was a fairly pleasant experience in the end, helped by Ian Briggs trailering service, took a lot of the stress out of it, thanks Ian.

DVLA man has been and inspected already so should be on the road soon.

Graham

It's castor that needs adjusting for self centring

Bad luck Graham, but not to hard to sort. As Mike says its the castor that needs to adjust but very little you can do with the sumo.

Dare I say just for the SVA a couple of jublee clamps inside the rubbers to limit the steering a bit
