Recon Calipers

Hello,

I've just been out poking around the pile of dirty rusty old bits in my garage, the capilers are in need of some serious attention.

Can anyone give advice on suppliers and the cost of getting a nice shiny recon ones? I've browsed the internet and can't find any anywhere?

I'm sierra based, discs all round, 260mm vented on the front. I hear the anodised ones look like the dogs dangly bits.

Alternatively, can anyone give me a rundown of whats involved with refurbing them myself, though I guess they'd never look too good as they can't really be painted?

Thanks

Chedz

Progress: Shed built, donor stripped, garage cleared, floor skimmed, tools on wall, chassis in, engine ordered. (I just need to build the car then its all done )

Re: Recon Calipers

Try these people - I bought various bits from them at the Stoneleigh show. They seem to know what they are talking about re all things Ford (not just capri's):

Re: Recon Calipers

Hi there

I bought recon calipers and new discs and pads all round. However, be aware that the caliper mounting bracket does not come with the recon caliper and either must be replaced or refurbed by yourself. I refurbed mine 'cos the cost of the bracket was almost the same as for the new caliper. Not too much problem, just a manky job. Wire brush and angle grinder soon solved. Prime and paint and Bob's your Mummy's brother!!!

Re: Recon Calipers

Chedz, get yourself down to Camberley Auto Factors. I got my rear calipers exchanged there and it cost me something like £50 each. The internal bits to repair them work out about £80 from Ford (go figure!).

Stripping and cleaning the calilpers is quite easy, especially the front ones. I found on my front ones that although the casings were quite rusty, the seals were good and the internal faces still looked new. Wire brush, sanding disc and hammerite has done a reasonable job of bringing them back to life. If the seals have gone on yours though, beware I couldn't find anywhere that would sell me just the seals. Ford wanted £40 odd quid for a "caliper repair kit" which included things like a new piston which I didn't need. My rear seals had gone and let water in rusting everything, so exchange was the easiest option.
