setting the speedo

Can anyone help.

I am trying to set the speedo and want to know how to work out the ratio of the rear diff. the metal tag with the ratio on has long since gone.
The diff came from the scap yard many months ago...so I cannot remember exactly which model it came out of.

The diff is mounted and I don't want to start taking the back off and counting teeth (messy job!)
Is there a way of working out the ratio and subsequently the number of pulses needed to enter into he speedo?

Any ideas welcome

Re: setting the speedo

Mark the input & output flanges then rotate the input until the output has done one or two whole revolutions. By noting the corresponding rotations of the input flange you can then work out the ratio.
Sometimes the tags don't represent the actual ratio in the case anyway so a manual check is always worthwhile.
