fuel pump

Hi, I'm close to starting up the 3.5l Rv8 (carbs) but need to fit the fuel pump.

Does anyone know the make/model of the fuel pump pilgrim supply for the RV8s, I always like to shop around and thought there might be an alternative or something better/cheaper. I think the Pilgrim one comes in a little bracket that lets you fit it neatly next to the tank, is this a Pilgrim special or part of the pump?

I asked in the motor factors place and the spotty faced 12 year old asked what car it was for and couldn't recommend anything unless it was on the computer and "computer says no".

I also hate paying all that money +pp to Pilgrim and like to share the wealth around

Re: fuel pump

Hi Lordy

Not sure what Pilgrim are supplying these days, they originally supplied me with a small solid state pump which destryed itself after a few months as it couldn't maintain delivery of fuel pressure above 4000 rpm  and ruined a perfectly good holiday as a result. I have now fitted a Facet interrupter type pump and regulator set to deliver about 4.5psi to a Weber set-up and have had no further problems since. :thumb: I believe you can also get a Facet solid state pump which will do the job just as well but I have no idea which is better. The pump comes with a bracket and rubber mounts which will fit next to the tank. Only thing you need to check is the delivery pressure matches the carb spec.

Re: fuel pump

Hi there

Likewise, I fitted a Facet silver top which provides the required flow and pressure for my Edelbrock set up. The pressure is 5.5psi and the flow is something like 11 gals/hr.
As stated, they come with mounting bobbins and everything required to fit. They are self priming, so basically they are plug and play.

Hope this helps

Phil

Re: fuel pump

I bought mine recently from Pilgrim, it seems to be one of these, but was almost twice the price

I had to make 2 L-shaped brackets to hold it upright in the correct position:

Re: fuel pump

Paulo,

I see you're 3.5 Rv8 too, so did you get the "Up to Rover 3500cc" pump from Pilgrim thats £50, or did they send you one of the larger ones for £95? I assume that this matches the one on the link you sent me:

Suction pump 12v. Fitted near the engine. Includes bracket.
Fuel delivery capacity 120L/Hr.
Pressure head 0.15 bar, suction head -0.20bar.
Ref:29612 £52.50

This (below, from the same site) is I assume the Facter Silver top that will also work with a Rv8 Elderbrock Carb set up?

Universal pressure fuel pump (interrupter pump) 12V 4-5 Psi. 113.5 Litres/hour. Self priming. 1.1 Metre fuel lift. 6mm tube connection. Built in pressure relief when ignition is turned off. Vertical mounting near tank prefered. Fitting instructions included.
Ref: 070003 £73.30

I thought the RV8 with carbs was a non-pressure system and so is this pump suitable?

I'm a bit unclear on this area, thanks anyone for advice.

Cheers

Re: fuel pump

Is Pilgrim offering both of those? I'm running (or about to when the wiring is finished) a RV8 3.5l with an edelbrock 500cfm carb with the same pump as paolo. The bracket to fit it does come with it but if you want to mount it to the side of the tank as most do you will need to make the brackets as Paolo said.

I'd advise spending a little bit more money to get something that won't break after 10 minutes.

Re: fuel pump

The basic Carter is a good pump, 72 gal/hour 4-6 psi. About £50 from American Autoparts, Customville etc

Re: fuel pump

Hi there

The Facet silver top will most certainly do the job. When fitting the pump I would advise the fitting of an inertia switch ( as fitted as standard to Granadas etc (Granadas have it on the back edge of the boot near the boot lock, it's a black switch with a white reset button)).
I fitted this on the back of the support for the fuel tank. This should be connected in the electrical supply to the fuel pump and cuts off the fuel pump in the event of an accident.

Cheers

Phil

Re: fuel pump

For the record I bought the larger £95 pump from Pilgrim. I assume this is the larger of the two pressure pumps on the link I posted.

Re: fuel pump

For information the smaller of the two Pilgrim pumps "up to Rover 3500cc" is the one which wouldn't deliver enough fuel at high revs (above about 4000) and this was initially noticed during setting up on the rolling road. As a result it basically failed completely  so I would suggest you avoid it if you want reliability.
