What manual gearbox other than a Tremec can be fitted to a chevy?

Re: Gearbox for Chevy?

Hi,

Toyota Supra manual tranny?

Also some chevy F body cars (Cameros & Firebirds '88 onwards) came with 'world class' T5's, but can be hard to find.

Richmond gearboxes but these can be more costly than the Tremec.

T10 were used in GM cars 57-63, then they were replaced by the Muncie 63 - 75, when power levels dropped in the 70's the muncie was dropped in favour of the Borg Warner super T10.

Few of the early boxes had electronic speedo drives so you would need use a mechanical drive or some other method ie propshaft sensors.

Regards
Chris

Re: Gearbox for Chevy?

How do you fit these gearboxes to the engine?
What parts do you need, and who supplies them?
What about a Ford 302? Does the same apply?

Re: Gearbox for Chevy?

Rudy,

Find a gearbox (with removable Bellhousing) Try Jag Cats at Pontefract for 80's 5 speed XJS box.
I got mating plate and thrust bearing from Ken at AK, but other people supply them, I think they're around £300 quid.

Re: Gearbox for Chevy?

How about a T56 six speed (as fitted to our LS1 engined F-body).

Re: Gearbox for Chevy?

Hi,

All the GM Bolt pattern gearboxes I listed will bolt to a Standard Chevy Bellhousing or an Aftermarket Mcleaod or Lakewood item.

Remember that these gearboxes come with different spline patterns so you will need to match the clutch to the gearbox input shaft size and spline count.

I think there a wide spread of gearboxes in use so you can ask other club members for feedback on a particular gearbox before you commit funds. Some of the older 4 speeds can feel agricultural if you are used to modern cars. Although I am sure that owners with Muncies and T10's etc will put me right on that point?

Regards
Chris

Re: Gearbox for Chevy?

Hi

I have a Chevy 305 ci on my Sumo previously fitted with an old T10 (1961) and a 3.37 Sierra diff.
Very good gear ratio. Despite a tricky 3rd gear the car was very pleasant and fast to drive (I live in the french Alps). I have now fitted a new TKO 500 but did a very short road test as the clutch wasn't correctly set up. Seems to be very good to. Sadly I can't say more as a bearing problem has appeared yesterday.
I have bought the Tremec in California at Classicchevy5speed. Good price, cheap shipping and very friendly and helpfull team.
Regards
Fredo
