Ford 351w / Gearbox

Has anybody fitted a Ford 351W in a Sumo III?
What problems did you come across?
What gearbox can be used other than a Tremec?
What about a T5 Cosworth, can this be used?

Re: Ford 351w / Gearbox

I fitted a 302 Ford which is a similar engine along with a T5 w/c box.

The main issues are that you have to consruct you're own engine mounts , exhaust headers and the gear lever hole has to be cut out about 4" further forward otherwise the heads hit the bulkhead. It is a bit tight especially between front pulley and rack but can be done with a bit of thought and time :thumb:

Re: Ford 351w / Gearbox

I think you will find the T5 'box to be short-lived when behind a 351W. Just not enough torque rating to cope. It will live for a while, and then break. How long that takes is pot luck, and significantly affected by your right foot.

You will (just) get away with one with a 302, so long as that 302 is not heavily re-worked.

There are people out there who will uprate a T5 'box, but frankly, you might just as well go for a tremec in the first place.

BTW, don't listen to anyone who tells you that the Cobra is such a light car, you don't need to have a heavy duty gearbox. They speak from an orifice normally reserved for other, quite separate, functions.

Wilf.

Gareth's T5 (as is mine) is the World Class option (not the cossie option) rated at 300 ft/lb's torque. More than enough for a cooking 351 I would have thought Ok i'm away to wipe my mouth

Re: Ford 351w / Gearbox

Sorry Chris - I have heard of more than enough world class T5s giving up behind 350 and 351s. 300 ft lbs is easily exceeded by a 5.7 lire V8, and the gearboxes just can't live with it. And I am entirely unsure of the 300lb ft claim anyway - 250 more like it.
Only folks with 289s/302s seem to get by with T5s, of any class.

Sorry mate, that is just how I see it. And I did put my money where my mouth was by going the TKO route myself, hence the term "filthy lucre". LOL

Wilf you may be right but I hope you're wrong coz my 302 is quite heavily re-worked.The T5 has taken a lot of abuse so far and is working fine.If it goes wrong now I'm going to blame you as you've probably jinxed it

Re: Ford 351w / Gearbox

Gareth, when you say about 4" forward, doesn't this come behind the dashboard, I have the Pilgrim fiberglass version?
Back to the T5, is this the US version or the cosworth version, and what about the bellhousing, or does it go straight onto the 302?
What did you do with regards to the mounts and headers?
