    Dash Board

    Hi all,

I have a polyester pilgrim dashboard. I notice that you have to use a lot of force to get it fixed to the body. Who had the same experience and what did you do.

Sorry I can't help as my Pilgrim dash fell off onto my lap whilst driving (not Pilgrims fault). Bit of a home made affair (not by me). Oh the memories of that car (mostly fond).
Best I can do is bring the thread to the top for you. As soon as people get back from Exeter or a Modern day Pilgrim owner see's this I'm sure you'll get a good remedy or answer.
    Good luck

    Bert,
I made a wooden template from 6mm ply then soaked it in water and used clamps/screws to hold it in place for a week whilst it dried out then you have a curved dash:thumb:

    Re: Dash Board

    Hi Bert

I purchased a ready built car but have spent a good few months adding my own touches. To be honest, it might have been quicker to build a car from scratch.

The original dashboard wasn't to my liking so I ordered a new one from Pilgrim along with all the trimming material. I made my own alterations such as cutting out chunks of dashboard and applying my own modifications. Once completed I bolted it to the dash and after some prolonged tightening of the nuts the dash fitted almost perfectly. Any minor imperfections were hidden by leatherette piping.

All in all everything seemed to go well so I am not sure if all Pilgrim dashboards are of the same dimension and shape. It could also have been that after removing large portions of dashboard that it was easier to bend and fit.

I have a picture in my gallery if you want to see the finished result although I am not sure how much help it will provide.

I spoke to a guy at Pilgrim the other day, he said the wooden dashes aren't too easy to get through the SVA as the foam isn't enough padding for the radius tests? Anyone come across this?

I'd prefer to get a wooden one as I'm not too keen on the inset bit in the centre of the fibreglass ones.

If woods ok, anyone got a template, I assume I could just buy a bit of ply and cut one out.

I think I still have the original Sumo plywood dash somewhere in my garage roof, if you want I'll have a look, yours for nothing, if you pay for p&p. :thumb: :thumb:

Well, I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background, one of the things I enjoy most is turning beer, wine, Scotch and margaritas into urine.

:thumb: Pilgrims glass dash fits perfect. It has enough flex to go to body shape.

    Re: Dash Board

    Hi Bert

I have a custom made fiberglass dashboard on my Sumo (probably not very different from the one supplied by Pilgrim). There is a very easy way to fit it to the body. I have glued 4 long bolts with polyester perpendicularly to the back of the dash on the top of it, then I have drilled 4 holes into the "lip" where the dash comes in contact with the body.
It is then easy to secure the dash to the body with 4 big washers and 4 "butterfly" nuts (this is how we call these nuts in France)- no tools required- you just tight the nuts with your hand behind the dash.
It becomes a piece of cake to fit or undo the dashboard ( about 3 minutes on my car!) See my gallery.
    Hope this can help you.
    Cheers,

    Fredo

    Re: Dash Board

My pilgrim supplied fibre glass dash needed a bit of trimming prior to covering with sponge/leather to get it to fit nicely. If you;re mounting holes are quite tight it can be a bit awkward, but it shoud bend easy enough. Similar level of ease/difficulty fitting either ply or fibreglass dash (I have tried both). Recommend you use M8 coach bolts from B&Q bonded in to the dash fastened with wing nuts. Much easier than the angle grinding double bolting version recomended on the mark evans vid.

But the fiddle was getting the instrument binnacle insert to fit nicely. As its not exactly symmetrical, and both dash and insert are oversized there was some *rsing about required.

    Re: Dash Board

    Hi guys,

The SVA requirements for the bottom edge of the dashboard are that it has a radius of not less than 19mm. The Pilgrim GRP panel has this radius. If using plywood ensure you radius the lower edge to meet this requirement. If leaving the glove box open, the lower edge can and has been deemed a shelf. In which case it will need to be at least 25mm high, have edges rounded to a radius of not less than 3.2mm and covered with a non rigid material. Failing any one of these is an SVA fail!! But they are easy to comply with.
